Say, now that government industries are collapsing, shouldn't all these surplus teachers and government workers be retrained as coders?

They would leave with your dog and come back with a cat.

Gravediggers.

According to about half the people I see commenting, that is the only growth industry for the foreseeable future.

This whole online learning thing is an excuse to keep the federal government funding coming. It’s the only way to pay the teachers.

I think only a certain percentage of the population have the ability to be coders.

Coding requires a work ethic and math skills help.
WhenI was in college education majors were mocked as being a major for people who can’t do real math.

There are exceptions in math and science teachers, but generally it is a fair cop, and people who dated an education major realized it quickly.

It was what it was.

Y’know some hot dog entrepreneur could probably code up an online teaching system where all the kids could work from hone.

This is why you're the Boss of this site -- good old-fashioned horse sense!!

Local Government Layoffs Soon?
3/17/20 - Walter Abbott

Unlike the Federal Government, The State of Louisiana and local governments cannot print money. They must rely on current revenues to meet expenses.

Lincoln Parish local budgets, with which we are intimately familiar, rely on sales taxes for a large percentage of revenue. The City of Ruston, in particular, funds all of the new 1.5% tax on restaurants and hotels.

With Gov. John Bel Edwards order shuttering restaurants all across the Bayou State, he has vaporized a huge revenue stream for local and state governments. Tourism will go away in the blink of an eye.

The largest expense component for government is payroll, in some cases making up 85% of expenses.

Many teachers probably thought closing the schools would amount to a month-long paid vacation. They perhaps should spend their time updating their resumes.

Used to be, having a government job was seen as having a lifetime guarantee of employment. You had to really mess up to get fired. Great retirement and medical benefits, too.

That hayride is about to end.

Most public school “teachers” are absolute morons. It burns me up how so many people, especially women, revere them as heroes or saints.

I was discussing with my wife the possibility of morphing our education system into a school from home model, or E-schooling, whatever you want to call it. Do people realize how much money this country could save doing this? All those public school buildings that wouldn’t need maintenance and all the costs involved with air conditioning, all the money saved on school bus related costs, all the money spent on food etc...

Teachers could still teach through the online, but we wouldn’t have to put up with their constant complaining about how they have to provide things for their classrooms, and parents could supervise and correct in real time any communist propaganda if they cared to.

And who’s going to supervise sweet Johnny and Betty Lou while Mom1 and Mom2 are at work? Maybe set up an electric fence around their rooms to zap em when they try to escape or start writing all over the walls. Teachers are cheap daycare.

The school system here has opted to send nothing home with students. I’m guessing they are hoping this is a short stoppage OR they think this could go on for months and they might not have any books or devices left after lil Johnny has them for three months. Some parents will work with their children. And then there are the others. A friend told his Facebook friends to go take a look at his local school system’s Facebook page to read the nasty comments by parents who have no intention of making their children complete the work the schools sent home.

There are plenty of dedicated teachers who care about their students’ learning and welfare.

Yes, a proportion of bad apples, and the unions have made the profession its own worst enemy by coddling them.

There is plenty of content on the web, which could be assembled into a series of lesson plans for most. May not need all the staff currently on the payroll. Some will be needed for certain circumstances (special needs, makeup work for the sick, etc.), and monitoring progress.

Question is, will parents step up? Again, many will. Those who can’t manage this can get help (e.g., disabled).

What to do when there are those parents that refuse to do their part is where the real paradigm shift will be.

Homeschooling ideas vanity thread I started a few days ago.

Not trying to self-promote, just thought it might be helpful for fellow Freepers and their families and friends. Thanks to those who provided input.

I seem to remember Joe Biden spearheading some big effort to get inner city youths into coding. I wonder how that worked out? I haven’t heard anything in a long time.

"My two high school aged kids were sent home, basically indefinitely. To my absolute shock and horror, they were not given an online account, curriculum, homework, studies...NOTHING. Asinine."

To my surprise, the way my first grade grandson's school in South Carolina handled the suspension of classes was surprisingly efficient and effective. I expected chaos but instead they had prepared home school and distance learning plans prepared for each student. Moreover, the district, utilizing all hands on deck set up extended meal delivery for kids in nutrition need.

While we all agree with Mr. Robinson's thoughts on the woes, of the American public school system, the Boiling Springs, SC district deserves some credit in this instance. Then again, the thought strikes me it was too well planned.

I spent some time as a miner. It was actually fun. The thing I like about miners is their work ethic. When the time comes you don’t want the guy next to you thinking your just a lazy bum.

But they are still serving the free meals. Which begs the question, “Just what is the purpose of public schools?”

They may or may not pay teachers who are not working. In Arizona as of yesterday it was still up in the air whether or not teachers would get paid. Not all teachers are bad and many make very little. My wife makes around 40,000 a year she is not some rich government worker.

Even worse, my girl is a substitute teacher. She's not getting anything.

BTW, I'm a 98charlie too :)

No, everyone should go back to work. We made a mistake. Better to lose a few and save many. That is a normal battle plan, but we decided to save a few and lose many. Poor leadership.

Enroll them with internship programs, which are NOT and should NEVER be represented by unions!
