In 1995 the archives of the Soviet Defense Ministry opened up to researchers, and a gaggle of graduate students converged on Moscow. In 1999 Putin shut the doors. During that four year period we learned a lot about Korea, Cuba, Vietnam and China.

In 1950 Kim Il Sung sold Stalin and Mao a bill of goods. He assured them that he could absorb South Korea without the West getting involved. At first it worked, but the Soviets blew it when their UN delegation walked out instead of using their Security Council veto to stop a UN intervention.

MacArthur landed a UN force at Inchon and rolled up the Norks. Stalin and Mao were furious. As long as MacArthur didn’t cross the 38th parallel, they decided to let Kim stew in his own juices. But as soon as MacArthur crossed that line and pushed the Norks into China, Mao intervened and sent his human wave attacks.

From the archives, we discovered that Chinese troops didn’t want to die any more than anybody else. Chinese officers and NCOs used their weapons to drive screaming and crying soldiers into the meat grinder.

When MacArthur was forced back, he suggested it was time to use the bomb on China.

We didn’t discover until 1995 just how weak the Soviet military really was in 1950. Soviet counterintelligence was superior to anything we had. Based on the intelligence available, Truman believed that if we used the bomb on China, Mao’s ally Stalin would nuke western Europe, invade, and then nuke the US. A nuclear attack on China would start World War III, and we would be up against an enemy who was our nuclear and military equal. We could lose.

What we found in the archives reversed that. It turned out that had Truman played the nuclear card in 1951, we would have won with no damage to the homeland. Western Europe might have lost a few cities, but we would have emerged pretty much unscathed. We never knew just how truly weak the Soviet Union was in 1950.

But Truman could only work with the intelligence he had, and that argued against a nuclear escalation.

Wow. I never even considered Russia in the picture.

My bad.

Sounds like Truman, with what he thought he knew, made the right decision.

Donaldus Magnus is, imho, an avid student of the 1948 election. His rallies closely resemble Truman’s whistle stops, and he’s as plain spoken as Truman, with the same common touch. He’s doing it again, and the Dems do not get it.

I thought David McCullough said that ‘48 was a landslide. I’ll have to re-check. He did get a legislative majority.

Yep - Warren is the only thing keeping Biden on top for now...

Typically entertaining, Cenk is actually correct on many points.

Biden IS senile.
The press IS covering that up.
It won’t be able to be covered-up when Trump is going after him.
Obama is every bit the Communist that Bernie is.
Biden CAN’T beat Trump.

I’m beginning to believe that what we mistake for senility is something else. Biden might just be an habitual lush. He sounded uncharacteristically lucid after South Carolina. Maybe he went on the wagon.

“Biden CAN’T beat Trump.”

Neither can Bernie or Liz. The point is to have a crushing defeat the Dems can live down, per Rush. If Bernie or Liz are the nominees, they will be crushed worse than McGovern, Mondale or Goldwater. So will Joe, most likely. But the difference is, that with Bernie and/or Liz, their blatant communism will be pinned on the Democrats forever more, and anyone with a moderate bone in their body will likely switch parties, leaving only the far-out left, a party of aging hippies, die-hard Marxists, and black separatists. Biden at least pretends to be moderate, and that is good enough cover to keep the party’s centrists from bolting by the time of a future election.

This, at least, is their calculation. I think they are losing rank-and-file as we speak. They keep calling Trump a traitor, a Nazi, a racist, etc. And he keeps gaining black and latinos, and playing hard ball with Russia, China and North Korea, while making progress all the while and ushering in an economy that the Dems are absurdly attempting to claim credit for. So it won’t really matter.

But screwing Bernie and backing Biden, who is either senile or a lush, may just cause the Dems to self-destruct permanently. Then we can have a meaningful dialogue with a serious major party, such as the Libertarians.

At the victory speech, he was reading from two teleprompters. Not lucid, programmed.

Donald Trump is a Harry Truman Democrat who ran as a Republican. This is why the Republican Establishment doesn't trust him and at first acted like a cluster of antibodies to remove his infection from the party with the Russia hoax. Paul Ryan summed it up best when he said that Trump "didn't know the codewords or the secret handshake."

The Democrat Party has gone so sharply to the left that neither Truman nor Kennedy would recognize it today. This is why Trump is rebranding the Republican Party as the party of the American worker, not the party of the American Country Club.

But it’s also the party of business and industry, and recognizes that employees and employers are symbiotic. So it’s not old-time Democrats wearing a different hat. This is synthesis.

The South was solidly Democrat, it hurt Truman more then Dewey. Dewey’s loss was remarkable.
