Thanks. My grandmother was among the first cohort to survive childhood with type I. I’m thankful for my daughter, and trust that when it is her time, God will take her appropriately. That said, I hope I go first.

I lost a niece to cancer a few years back. It was hard—and I think harder on my Dad. Parents burying children is a tough thing, and one that we aren’t used to in this culture.

I think I’ll drive into Ottawa to the hospital for the appointment, go, and then get the Hell out. While the mask isn’t a bad idea, my estranged wife and I already clash over enough and I don’t need to scare the tar out of a 7 year old, so I’ll do whatever the hospital dictates well, but largely steer clear.

Fortunately the diabetes clinic ought to be relatively low risk.

I’ll try picking up some more toilet paper and rice in one of the outlying towns that ought to be relatively clear of diversity.

And then I’m going to get back to being close to an hour from a stoplight. I’ll take that over a mask.

Yes, agree. Thank God that hasn’t happened, although it was close for my parents (as they nearly lost a kid, my brother, and a grandchild...but both are good now).

Just as a suggestion, perhaps talk to your doctor to see if insulin doses can be lowered a bit for her, if she stays away from carbs. It should help, as it certainly does with Type 2’s, but I’m sure it won’t end the dependence (nothing will), but using less may make supplies last longer, should they get disrupted in some way.

The insulin is mostly in my estranged wife’s hands, and she and I couldn’t agree what day of the week it is.

With optimal strategy, I imagine that one could stretch things out for maybe 50% longer (there is a fair bit of this behaviour in One Second After). I think if I suggested anything, my girl would mostly be subjected to suffering through seeing her parents fight over her. She’s the only one of the six who still frequently vocalizes hope that we will somehow patch things up.

I can see scenarios where things turn bad, but Ottawa itself rides it out better than nearly any other city (it’s a d*** G-7 capital after all) and that we are close enough to be able to stay supplied if supplies get tight.

I bet if push comes to shove, Ottawa will let Montreal and Toronto burn, but we are, as it were, in the Ottawa Marches.

Fist and foremost is always self-protection. Don’t travel into areas of high population, don’t have visitors from cities or over-seas. There’s great value in living in small country towns or isolated regions.
Vitamin D in large doses promotes immunity.

She visited Iran. She’s probably not Chinese.

Best yet might be d3 from the sun.

Probably not a lot of that right now in this country, depending on where you live.

Look it up though. Best time is around noon for about 20-30 minutes.

Don’t burn.

Calories are the hardest part. My wife doesn’t get it. She thinks I’m too skinny and is always tempting me. I make it most of the week, but on a given Saturday night there is a good chance that I will grab a bite or two of the piece of cheesecake she intentionally leaves in the fridge next to my water.

That would be an upside. I grew up in the 70s and still like slim girls in Levis. Never liked the scrawny ones. I’m so sick of looking at fat people these days.

For those at zero, what should they buy for a month at home if they go to Sams/Costco tomorrow?

Yep. My eldest was born in Peterborough, a Toronto exburb, at the time of the outbreak. Same time as Gulf War II—my wife went into labor just before the war started.

Emirates and Etihad will be the international carriers of the virus. Through Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Flights from Communist China are mostly still going on. Scary part is this:

From 14 February, the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) will conduct a COVID-19 test on passengers arriving from Beijing with Dubai as their final destination. Passengers who are transiting through Dubai International airport will not be tested.

Read the last sentence again. Remember Dubai is a major transit point.

Buy what you normally buy, just more of it. I’d plan for 6-8 weeks. Pay attention to perishables, of course. Some (like butter, cheese, cream cheese) will freeze. Also toss in a bag of rice, some beans and some spices. Just in case things go ‘full wuhan’. If this all passes over you’ve got groceries sorted for a while, enjoy spring/summer w/o having to trudge out in the rainstorms to get groceries.

Also buy stuff like toilet paper, bleach, lysol, etc. You will still use it. You will just be able to go longer w/o buying more if things don’t go mad max here.

We bought some electronic stuff we’d been looking at for a while but hadn’t gotten. We got a spare TV (found one for $99 at walmart), a spare DVD player, a replacement cell phone (my first FIVE choices were already sold out!), etc.

And anything ‘made in china’ or made elsewhere with stuff made in china. I bought some spare garden implements. Nothing much, just a cpl spades. Things I would find inconvenient to replace if they stopped showing up on the shelves and might have a tricky time finding a workaround.

Also batteries, candles and some flats of water. Just in case your area has a storm and the electric company can’t come fix stuff right away because they’re sick or under quarantine. This is ‘storm prep’ for us coastal people anyways.

I’d add a round of OTC meds you normally take. Stored properly they will keep for years (the pills/tablets, NOT the liquids, gels or etc). Those are largely made in china or elsewhere with ingredients made in china.

YMMV, of course.

My bigger concern is my kids.

If they were grown, I would be a bit more comfortable. Hate to think of leaving them behind.

By my 11 year old said “So at worst we get to go to heaven early! Middle worst is we eat a lot of mac and cheese!”
