Senators reportedly wore Apple Watches to the impeachment trial, seemingly violating the electronics ban

Electronics are banned from Trump's impeachment hearing.

Some senators reportedly flouted this rule, and wore (Apple) smart watches to the proceedings.

According to decorum guidelines given to senators before the trial began, electronics are not allowed in the room at all. The rules read "No use of phones or electronic devices will be allowed in the Chamber. All electronics should be left in the Cloakroom in the storage provided." The rules prohibit tools that senators would typically use to connect with the outside world and share information on social media, although it seems likely that Trump himself will be on Twitter.

Sen. John Cornyn, one of the senators who reportedly wore an Apple Watch during the trial, told The Hill last week "We will not have our electronic devices. I just saw a piece of cabinetry in the cloakroom where we will be required to turn over our iPads and our iPhones."

Along with Cornyn, Roll Call reported that Sens. Mike Lee, John Thune, Jerry Moran, John Barrasso, Tim Scott, Michael Bennet, and Patty Murray were reportedly spotted with smart watches.

Nice jab there. Trump is in Davos, not the Senate.

Well you cant really do much with one, so I dont see a smart watch as that big a deal. It would be obvious if you are on-camera swiping on it.

There was a story posted yesterday regarding Ted Cruz tweeting from the chamber floor. He had a priceless response.

Death penalty for Republicans using the watches but no penalty for Democrats.

‘Come and take it,’ tweets Cruz about his phone

Senator TED CRUZ — or at least, his social media manager — mocked the ban, tweeting an image of an iPhone that says “come and take it” after he was accused of tweeting during the proceedings. But Cruz hasn’t been spotted with an iPhone on the Senate floor, and a Cruz spokesperson later confirmed to The Verge that he didn’t bring his phone onto the Senate floor.

Taking photos, videos, or audio recordings has been banned in the House of Representatives since 2017, with violators paying up to a $2,500 fine starting on their second offense.

They are blue-tooth connected with limited range to the smart phone. Mine drops out after 40 feet.

Can’t you access email, send messages, etc.? (Asking, ‘cause I don’t know.)

Older smart watches were more or less just display extensions of your phone, so you could read texts, etc., only when it was near to and paired with your phone.

The latest Apple watches include their own cellular connections so they can surf the web, send and receive texts and tweets, and place phone calls without a phone present.

If the Internet is turned off, the Apple watch is really just a watch. It can track your heartbeat. But otherwise, it’s pretty useless. At least mine is.

“They’re not Dick Tracy watches for cryin’ out loud.”

Actually they kinda are like Dick Tracy watches... You can send and receive email and text messages, and make and receive phone calls. Most require being in proximity with and connected to the iPhone via bluetooth, or else connected to wifi in order to do these things, and it’s pretty obvious when you’re doing them on the Apple Watch. If you have one that has it’s own cellular service all the functions are available w/o the iPhone, but it’s still obvious what your doing.

You can buy 4 and 5 through Sprint, complete with cellular connection. Add apps. A smart phone you wear on your wrist.

I’m not so sure I want any of our elected officials wearing smart watches at any time. They should pitch the smart phones in the trash also. I’m not too trusting of either device.
