Then, as you say, there's today's beard. Lots of guys need to be clued in "that looks AWFUL. You simply can't grow a beard."
As I type this, I'm wearing a Grunt Style hoodie that fits comfortably. my hair's pretty short, I haven't shaved for a couple of days but I will before I go to work tonight. NO tattoos.
Personally I think close cropped beards look good on the younger men. Older guys with grey maybe not so much. I grow weekend or a few days scruff in winter then shave it off. Beards in hot weather— nope. Seems some women like beards and others do not. Personal preferences.
Ha, I “tried” growing a beard twice, years apart while injured and unable to easily shave, and long enough for it to grow out a few inches.
It was thin, curly hair, that seemed to need to be combed all the time and looked silly, especially with the two bald patches where dimples would be if I had them.
Most of the male Hallmark main characters seem to have the 7 pm shadow thing going, mostly with makeup.
Having said that, my beloved Mr. Inspectorette never grew a beard, but he did have a very dashing 'stache.

That’s a beard that a man wears. The homos thin theirs and keep it perfectly trimmed and manicured.
My husband was clean shaven when I met him. He’s tried it all. Clean shaven, full beard, mustache with goatee; did not matter. He still looks wonderful to me.
But if asked for my preferred look, clean shaven is the best. Why hide such a handsome face behind a mop of hair?
Your wife is probably like me. She loves your face and wants to see all of it.
Some men look better with beards. It gives their face definition, fills it out, squares it off, etc. Some look odd.
As long as it is neat and clean, beards are cool. I hate the rangy looking bushes or the stringy little chin pubes. Tidy it up or shave it off.
I cannot understand it. This is UGLY. How can women go for THIS?
