'World's worst' measles outbreak in the Congo has now killed 6,000 people – almost three times more than the Ebola death toll in the African nation

Measles has killed nearly three times as many people as Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo, figures show.

Around 6,000 patients have died from measles since the start of 2019, with cases reported in every corner of the African country.

More than a quarter of a million people have been infected in that time, with the World Health Organisation describing it as the 'world's worst outbreak'.

Despite the growing death-toll, the DRC's simultaneous Ebola outbreak has gained far more international attention.

The outbreak of the virus has killed at least 2,231 people since the first case was reported in August 2018.

The WHO said a crippling lack of funding was allowing both epidemics to rage on, as the DRC's already-limited health resources strain while trying to tackle them both.

Good thing the anti vaccers are helping bring measles back to the world. No big deal. Just killed more than Ebola.

The hell you say. Just out of curiosity, how much funding has been provided? Also, how much funding does WHO get every year?

I don’t believe them either.

More like *Financial mismanagement and funneling of funds into executives pockets* led to allowing the epidemics raging on.

I’ll bet the WHO leaders are living very comfortably.

Interesting thing I read about measles was that it seems to reset your immune system.

I had it when I was young and so that may be why I had mumps for a second time as an adult.

Measles appears to make your immune system ‘forget’ things that it has already fought and thus given you immunity to.

I had mumps twice! As a baby and as an adult, but had measles in between which may have been responsible for me catching mumps for a second time.

“Just killed more than Ebola”

Sensationalism.

Measles kills less then 1% of those it infects. Ebola kills more that 70% of those it infects.

According to your logic you would compel everyone to get a flu shot every year as it is the #1 killer in the world, every year.

As a child before vaccinations, measles was a normal right of passage and not considered dangerous except for pregnant women. Is this a new strand?

Ebola is more trendy than measles... And socialist western countries prefer to react to perceived threats rather than real threats.

There are FReepers who poo-poo the idea of measles being much ado about nothing.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.

These people must have weakened immune systems. It’s easy to dehydrate due to the raging fever. My mother worked furiously to keep my fever as low as she could. Thank god for witchazel and cotton...she kept the stuff in the fridge, put it on cotten batten and put tje cotton on my eyes. That felt so good. She gave me rubdowns which cooled my body temp. In those days, baby asprin was a must..it wasn’t tylenol so it was effective against fever.

It’s german measels that was dangerous for pregnant mothers. Very different from 7 day measels. You can have german measels and not know it because it presents itself as a 3 day cold..frequently no rash.

I had measles several times growing up and once as an adult. Never did have the mumps, but I sure got “chicken pops!”

Are the global warmers rejoicing? Less people equals less CO2, isn’t that what they are always demanding?
