Please Stop Telling Miners To Learn To Code

God only knows where Biden got the idea that coal mining consists of throwing the stuff into a furnace. That’s not how it works, but I digress. Biden’s recommendation is stale stuff. It’s the kind of rhetoric that will only sway voters whose ideal president is a machine that spits out a white paper from 1998 every time someone pushes a button. Re-training programs for workers in precarious industries have been with us for a long time.So has a specific fixation on the tech industry, as though it’s a cure-all for rural poverty.

But 1998 was a long time ago. It’s evident now that re-training programs – including the ones that teach miners and factory workers and whoever else to code – are not the panacea that technocrats hoped they’d become. “Despite decades of investments by the federal government in a patchwork of job-retraining efforts, most have been found to be ineffective according to numerous studies over the years, and it remains unclear to experts whether the programs are even up to the task of preparing workers for the new economy,”Jeffrey Selingo recently wrote for The Atlantic. Privately-run efforts aren’t always effective, either. As the New York Times reported earlier this year, students sued the founders of Mined Minds, a non-profit that promised paid apprenticeships every graduate of its coding program, for fraud. The jobs did not appear;most students didn’t even complete the program.

“They’re coming here promising stuff that they don’t deliver,” the husband of a former student told the Times. ““People do that all the time. They’ve always done it to Appalachians.”

Some day, the mines will close, and mining communities will need new jobs and radical policy solutions if they’re going to survive. But Biden and his fellow technocrats fail to grasp a foundational fact about coal

not coding but they could learn welding. there’s tremendous demand for welders and the pay is fantastic. this is true for a bunch of different trades. training takes a year sometimes two. and they’re good to go.

“Learn to code”

Doesn’t get you anywhere with big tech hiring people from India to do their coding.

Stay in your place is the Leftists’ mantra.

I remember seeing wage stats on ‘retrained’ workers a while ago. They made, maybe, 50% of what their old job paid. You shove me into a coal mine and pay me by productivity and I’ll be lucky to make 10% of what miners make...they’re damn special people to go down there and pull coal for Americans.

...and I’m still old enough to remember when Democrats used to RESPECT hard-working Americans, now they save their ‘respect’ for rich globalists, Illegals, and people who can’t figure out what their body parts are for.

We need coal. Coal is concentrated energy. Can’t get that from a solar panel or a windmill. Isn’t going to happen.

1. Coal may not be dead, but we have plenty of cleaner energy sources that have been killing the industry for decades.

2. Journalists should learn to code

Absolutely....

Here in NYS, we're trading off rich farmlands for solar farms....which we don't need. We could tap the natural gas....but that would be too easy.

Coal is there for the taking.

Learn to code? Ha! To excel, heck even to have modest success and anything resembling job satisfaction in software development you have to have the knack. Training can only take you so far. If you don’t have “it” you can’t learn it. Development is a creative endeavor. Authoring software is similar to working on a commissioned piece of art. There are guidelines to follow, constraints, but it is still a creative act.

The Democrat “ learn to code” mantra is a snarky insult to blue collar workers.

Democrats are so scummy and condescending to working class people in fly over country that the Dems dont think they are smart enough to wipe their butts properly, much less write sophisticated computer code.

Fact is, there are a very few jobs in the programing biz and even fewer people who are really qualified to write code
