um, are you a black helicopter kind of guy? honest question.
> “So most likely issue is lax password security.”
I agree and all of us are guilty of that to some extent.
I shudder to think the Dark Web might have some of my recent passwords. Now I have to schedule a time to change them all.
Password management seems a ripe App field money-making opportunity.
“Partner” is the new way of saying “wife or husband or girlfriend or boyfriend”
It’s another move to delegitimize marriage.
But this is a UK article and that’s a very common term there... it’s taken hold already. I’ve noticed many us media outlets trying to push it here also.
if she installed a camera app (or any other IoT device, for that matter) and didn’t change the default password, that’s foolish. if she installed a camera app without MFA, that’s moderately foolish.
it doesn’t mean that they were targeted by someone in desoto county, MS, four days after they installed the thing.
...did I miss where it said the mom removed the camera from the room?
Check out Dr Phil episode Terrorized by Technology . Expert explains how this happened to family using Ring. Scary.
A security camera, on the other hand, gives an outsider potential a view into your house. That is quite a bit more threatening.
The article says hackers can pinpoint the locations of Ring doorbells by getting into the network. So what? Honestly, they are probably less likely to try and break into my house if they know they will be video doing it. My address is not a big secret- anyone can drive down my street.
Nannycams and similar should have secure networks and passwords, though. Totally different.
This wasn’t a baby monitor. Its a Ring camera.

And garage door openers.
Ah, an internet device. My mistake.
YOU are Number Six
Home “security” gadgets PLUS the Cloud, what could possibly go wrong.
Well, the Cloud actually means the entire world.
And security means a homeowner needs a 5 year masters degree in security to set up the gadget.

You dog is peeing right there in the flower garden.
why in the world do you think that on something called The World Wide Web, hackers have to live down the street, and have some sort of a grudge? it's just mystifying.
How many dimwits have now stupidly invited a world of hackers into their homes/lives ???
There is no default password on the Ring app; you have to use the Ring app after creating an account on ring.com to access the camera and link it to your network. It then directly connects to Ring’s servers where all video is stored and all access from the app and webpage are routed through.
Interestingly enough, ring devices don’t return pings or follow the standard connection ports, though a port scan did connect a SSH session briefly before it disconnected and changed ports again. You can not access a ring device locally without internet access. If the house’s internet connection goes down but the router remains up, the Ring device does not connect through to the app.
Tell me again why I would want this crap in my house....
