Justin Fields left Georgia because UGA has not had a black starting QB in recent memory.

Same reason Justin Fields left Georgia. He wanted to start.

The SEC has been the strongest conference in recent years, but it has hollowed out. The Big Ten has the best balance; there are several teams in the middle of the pack that can (and usually do) rise up and stick a loss on the league leaders somewhere along the line. The ACC remains a basketball conference; in football, it’s Clemson and then crickets. The SEC is regularly in the running for two playoff spots mainly because the mid-tier programs have collapsed, so the top teams cruise. The PAC 12 has receded because California is now north Mexico, and Mexicans don’t play football. USC-UCLA used to be like Ohio State-Michigan, Texas-Oklahoma, or Alabama-Georgia-LSU (pick two). Fans under 40 don’t remember that at all.

Body of work for the year - the Ohio Sate University is about one touchdown better than Clemson, and 10 points better than LSU. Last four games: about equal for all three, with Clemson games harder to tell because of much weaker opposition. LSU is about 10 points better than Oklahoma, who would be ranked #13 based on margin of victory and strength of schedule.

On this basis, Alabama was #4, less than 1/2 point softer than LSU and 9 1/2 better than Oklahoma. OSU played the #1 toughest schedule in the country, with LSU #3 toughest and Alabama #6. Clemson played the #31 toughest schedule, with the same margin of victory as Ohio State over the season. #5 would be Wisconsin, a full 5 points weaker than Alabama. But the number of losses and recency of losses matters to the human voters of the selection committee, which still does much better than the AP or coaches polls.

After Carter, there was DJ Shockley.

He got a lot of playing time. He could run, but he wasn’t much of a thrower....

UGA’s new incoming head coach in 2001, Mark Richt, made Shockley a priority recruit, and he is generally regarded as Richt’s first official recruit at Georgia.

Richt ultimately chose redshirt freshman David Greene to be the starting quarterback for the Bulldogs in 2001, while Shockley was redshirted. Greene went on to set the NCAA record for wins as a starting quarterback in a career, but over the course of those four years, Shockley did see some playing time in a modified dual-quarterback system.

In 2002 as a redshirt freshman, playing in parts of 10 games, Shockley completed 32-of-52 passes (61.5%) for 415 yards with five touchdowns and a pass efficiency rating of 152.62. He rushed for 111 yards and two more touchdowns.[4] He also threw a 37-yard TD pass in the Nokia Sugar Bowl win over Florida State University as the Bulldogs wrapped up their first SEC Championship season in 20 years.[5]

One of Shockley’s finest moments as a redshirt freshman came on October 26 of that year as he and Greene combined to throw for a school-record six touchdown passes in Georgia’s comeback win over Kentucky, 52–24. The Wildcats, playing in their own stadium, had led 24–21 at the half. Shockley went 10-of-14 passing for 102 yards and two touchdowns as coach Richt rotated him into the game every third series during the contest.[6]

In 2003, Shockley injured his knee midway through the season and finished with 9-of-21 pass attempts for 88 yards and one touchdown. He added another 101 yards on the ground and a rushing touchdown in six games.[7]

In 2004, Shockley completed 26-of-60 (43.3%) passes for 464 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. He had 24 rushes for 113 yards in 10 games.[8] Shockley earned an SEC Academic Honor Roll award in 2004 as a Speech Communications major. He is a member of the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity.

Following the Bulldogs’ opening win against Boise State, Shockley was named Cingular All-America Player of the Week for his 374-yard, six touchdown effort (289 yards, 5 TDs passing; 85 yards, 1 TD rushing) against the Broncos.[9] He was also named Sporting News Player of the Week and SEC Player of the Week, and nominated for USATODAY.com Player of the Week after the Boise State game. He was one of 11 Division I-A football players named to AFCA’s National Good Works Team, which recognizes “players who have devoted themselves to exemplary community service.” He was also chosen as a semi-finalist for the 2005 Draddy Trophy.[10]

In 2005, Shockley played in 12 of Georgia’s 13 games, completing 173-of-310 (55.8%) passes for 2,588 yards and 24 touchdowns with five interceptions. He also gained 322 yards rushing in 78 attempts with four touchdowns. Shockley had a longest run of 40 yards and completed a 56-yard touchdown pass to tight end Martrez Milner for his longest pass play of the season—as both of these highlights occurred in the same game on September 3, 2005 against Boise State.[11]

In Georgia’s seventh game of the season against Arkansas, Shockley had to leave early in the second quarter with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee. Because of his injury, he had to sit out Georgia’s eighth game of the season against one of the school’s most hated rivals, the University of Florida Gators, in the Florida vs. Georgia Football Classic. Redshirt junior Joe Tereshinski III was named the starter, and he finished the game completing 8-of-21 passes for 100 yards and an interception. Georgia lost the game, 14–10.[12]

Shockley returned for the ninth game of the season on November 12 against the Auburn Tigers, but despite playing very well, completing 20-of-36 passes for 304 yards and two touchdowns and running eight times for another 40 yards, Georgia lost the game 31–30 on a last-second field goal to fall to 7–2 on the season.[13] After beating the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 14–7, Georgia went on to play the LSU Tigers in the SEC Championship game. Shockley threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as Georgia won the game, 34–14, to claim the 2005 SEC Championship title. Shockley was named the MVP of the SEC Championship game.

The University of Georgia’s football season and Shockley’s collegiate career ended with a 38–35 loss to the West Virginia Mountaineers in the Nokia Sugar Bowl on January 2, 2006. Despite the loss, Shockley had an excellent performance throwing for 277 yards (on 20 completions in 33 attempts) and three touchdowns while running for 71 yards on eight carries.[14]

Shockley won the FCA Bobby Bowden Football Player of the Year Award,[15] finished third in the voting for the Associated Press Player of the Year,[16] and led Georgia to a 10–3 record and the No. 10 ranking nationally by the AP College Football Poll during his senior year.

4. SEC
5. Pac-12
6. Mountain West
7. Atlantic Coast
8. Sun Belt

Okay.

Fields was the subject of a racist comment from Georgia baseball player Adam Sasser during Georgia’s victory over Tennessee in Athens on Sept. 29, and, as SI’s Andy Staples pointed out when the news of his intention to transfer leaked, Fields could make the case if he wants that Sasse’s words are grounds for transfer without an eligibility penalty.

Ha! Nice.
That’s gonna be a good game freefdny. Ohio State looked pretty mortal first half last night. I get that they throttled Wiscy in the first matchup and it’s difficult to do something like that twice. But Wisconsin was just pounding that ohio state D early. And tosu’s O was not crisp at all. Down 14, Fields threw a post that should have been 6 except the receiver ran shallow on the route because, from my perspective, he allowed the defender to squeeze him off his route late. Fields had already let that ball rip and the receiver adjusted shallow at the last second. I gotta believe since Fields put the ball on the post, the receiver was supposed to run there. Fields fumble a little later. Just a lot of little things like that which was very unlike them.
What I saw led me to believe they maybe were a little too relaxed going into that game. Like they were thinkin they had it wrapped. It was a lot of self-inflicted mental errors and mistakes. Meanwhile Wisconsin was prepared to make a business transaction.
Ohio State does that crap vs Clemson and it’s ballgame. I believe they won’t be making all those unforced errors again, should be entertaining to watch.

You may be right. But LSU does not run an SEC offense. They run the spread, pin ball, dazzle dazzle, exciting form of football. Never forget that the spread was perfected by all teams (except for Kansas State) in the Big 12 for the last ten years. The teams of OU, OSU, Baylor, West Virginia, and even Texas taught the country about putting speed and athletes on the edge every play. OU has thousands of hours preparing for the spread offense. As I have told friends before, the strength of the spread offense is that it puts 5 receivers in play for every snap. It virtually guarantees man to man defensive coverage on every down. Tackling in the open field is a premium. A QB that reads progressions, is accurate and makes snap decisions will light up the scoreboard. That was Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray. That is Joe Burrow this year. The way tp beat a spread offense is with speed on defense.

This season OU runs the spread, but because of the skillset of Jalen Hurts, it is a running team. Before the Oklahoma State game Mike Gundy (head coach at Oklahoma State) was asked how he prepared for the aerial circus of OU’s offense. He said that OU is not a throwing team - they are a running team. He even called it the wishbone out of the spread formation. After thinking about it, and reflecting on it, I tend to agree with him. One thing wishbone teams were known for was the running of the QBs. That is what made the triple option work. Gundy then listed the number of carries of Jack Mildren, Thomas Lott, JC Watts, Jamelle Holiday, and a few other wishbone QBs. none of them had over 145 carries. Then he said look at Jalen Hurts. At the time JH had 180 carries for the season. He got double digits against both OSU, and Baylor yesterday. I think Gundy is right. OU is a running team. Before OSU, OU ran the ball on 72% of its offensive plays. Against OSU they ran the ball 44 out of 71 plays - 71%. Yesterday was running plays were 50 out of 74 total - 68%.

LSU may be the real deal because of Burrow, but he will have to have the game of a lifetime. I like OU’s chances against the spread, and also over on the total. The early line is OU getting 12.5 points with 75 being the over/under. Someone taking OU straight up on the money line would increase their amount wagered by 3.5 times.

The lay people (not oddsmakers) have determined that the four are the best four football teams in America at this point in time. It will be interesting if any players from any of the four decide that their future NFL prospects are worth more than playing in another college game. It will be interesting to watch it all unfold from my seat at the Mercedes-Benz Dome in Atlanta.

Why would I want to read your links?

All you want to do is say UGA is racist.

You sound like a dem.

You certainly have their condescension down to a T.

It's Bayou Joe, named so via adoption. 8>)

After redshirting his first year at Ohio State in 2015, Burrow spent the next two years as a backup to J. T. Barrett. Over the two years, he played in 10 games, completing 29 of 39 passes for 287 yards and two touchdowns.[8] Realizing that Dwayne Haskins would be named starting quarterback at Ohio State, Burrow transferred to Louisiana State University (LSU) in May 2018. Burrow had graduated from Ohio State in three years with a degree in consumer and family financial services, and would be immediately eligible as a graduate transfer.

In his first year at LSU, Burrow was named the starting quarterback as a redshirt junior in 2018. In an early season road trip to then-No. 7 Auburn, Burrow threw for 249 yards and a touchdown en route to a 22–21 win. He was named SEC Offensive Player of the Week following the victory. He again earned SEC Offensive Player of the Week honors following a 292-yard, three-touchdown performance against Ole Miss two weeks later. Burrow helped lead the Tigers to a 10–3 record, including a win over UCF in the Fiesta Bowl, and a No. 6 ranking in the final AP Poll. Burrow finished the season with 2,894 yards passing, 16 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions. He added 399 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.

Burrow was again named LSU's starting quarterback heading into his redshirt senior season in 2019. In the Tigers' season opener against Georgia Southern, Burrow threw for 278 yards and five touchdowns in a 55–3 win, and was later named SEC Co-Offensive Player of the Week (with Tua Tagovailoa). In a week two road trip to then-No. 9 Texas, Burrow threw for 471 yards, four touchdowns, and an interception in the 45–38 win. His 471 yards were the second most in school history and most since Rohan Davey's 528 against Alabama in 2001. He was named Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week and SEC Offensive Player of the Week following the performance. Burrow earned his third SEC Offensive Player of the Week honors on September 21st during LSU's game against Vanderbilt. He threw for 398 yards and a school-record-setting six passing touchdowns in the Tigers' 66–38 win. He became the first LSU quarterback to ever throw for 350 yards in three consecutive games.

In a 42–6 win over Utah State, Burrow threw for 344 yards and five touchdowns, and became the first ever Tiger quarterback to throw for 300-plus yards in four consecutive games. The streak came to an end the next week against then-No. 7 Florida, but Burrow's 293 yards and three touchdown passes helped lead the Tigers to another big win, 42–28. The next week, in LSU's seventh game of the season, Burrow eclipsed the LSU single-season passing touchdowns record of 28 when he added four more in a win against Mississippi State. Burrow led the Tigers to another top-ten win, and broke the LSU record for career 300-yard games (eight) with a 321-yard, two-total-touchdown performance against then-No. 9 Auburn.

LSU's November 9 game against Alabama was highly anticipated as the highest ranked showdown between the two schools since the 2012 BCS National Championship Game; LSU was ranked second and Alabama third in the season's inaugural College Football Playoff rankings released the week prior. The game would also feature two leading candidates for the Heisman Trophy in Burrow and Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Burrow and the Tigers came away victorious in a 46–41 shootout. Burrow passed for 393 yards and three touchdowns in the game, and was again named Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week and SEC Co-Offensive Player of the Week.

The following week against Ole Miss, Burrow threw for 489 yards and five touchdown passes, and passed LSU's single-season passing yards record set by Rohan Davey in 2001. He also set the LSU record of consecutive completed passes with 17 during the game. On November 30, Burrow helped LSU secure an undefeated regular season with a 50–7 blowout win over Texas A&M, throwing for 352 yards and three touchdowns. During the game, he set the all-time SEC record for single-season passing yards (previously set by Kentucky's Tim Couch), and tied the conference record for single-season touchdowns of Missouri's Drew Lock. Burrow took sole possession of the SEC single-season touchdown record the following week in the SEC Championship Game, throwing for four TDs in LSU's dominant 37–10 win over Georgia that secured the Tigers' place in the College Football Playoff, and according to the Associated Press "finished off his likely Heisman Trophy coronation."

Please show your work on how Alabama played the 6th toughest schedule in the country. Outside of LSU and Auburn they played a bunch of mediocre teams and a middle of the road Texas A&M.
