I HOPE THIS WILL PUT A SMILE ON YOUR FACE AND IN YOUR HEART. This is a tribute to a man who DID make a difference.

ON TURNING 70 'I still chase women, but only downhill.'

ON TURNING 80 'That's the time of your life when even your birthday suit needs pressing.'

ON TURNING 90 'You know you're getting old when the candles cost more than the cake.'

ON TURNING 100 'I don't feel old. In fact, I don't feel anything until noon. Then it's time for my nap.'

ON GIVING UP HIS EARLY CAREER, BOXING 'I ruined my hands in the ring. The referee kept stepping on them.'

ON NEVER WINNING AN OSCAR 'Welcome to the Academy Awards, or as it's called at my home, 'Passover.'

ON GOLF 'Golf is my profession. Show business is just to pay the green fees.'

ON PRESIDENTS 'I have performed for 12 presidents but entertained only six.'

ON WHY HE CHOSE SHOWBIZ FOR HIS CAREER 'When I was born, the doctor said to my mother, Congratulations, you have an eight pound ham.'

ON RECEIVING THE CONGRESSIONAL GOLD MEDAL 'I feel very humble, but I think I have the strength of character to fight it.'

ON HIS FAMILY'S EARLY POVERTY 'Four of us slept in the one bed. When it got cold, mother threw on another brother.'

ON HIS SIX BROTHERS 'That's how I learned to dance. Waiting for the bathroom.'

ON HIS EARLY FAILURES 'I would not have had anything to eat if it wasn't for the stuff the audience threw at me.'

ON GOING TO HEAVEN 'I've done benefits for ALL religions. I'd hate to blow the hereafter on a technicality.'

Give me a sense of humor Lord, give me the grace to see a joke,

to get some humor out of life, and pass it on to other folk.

I actually met him once and shook his hand. I was just a kid (11) on a transatlantic crossing.

An on board friend and I staged a pratfall on the staircase as Hope was coming down. Hope stopped to see if we were all right. Hence the opportunity to meet, speak, and shake hands.

I shook Bobby Kennedy’s hand once as well (high school), although he never even looked at me. It was just a perfunctory campaign handshake. One of hundreds, maybe thousands that day as his hand was obviously swollen/puffy.

Have had a few ‘brief encounters’...Tony Snow, Atty.Gen. Jeff Sessions, when I worked in DC. A few others down the memory hole.

Classic. One of the all time greats. I also loved Jack Benny’s standup from back when.

I like show tunes. It bothers me that show tunes became very “gay”. Cagney, Hope, Astaire, Gene Kelly — there was no hont of homosexuality about these men. They were just great dancers and singers. Musicals used to be fun.

Today, Broadway is a weird little world with no masculinity.

I remember Bob Hope doing those USO tours for the troops in Vietnam.
Ann Margaret was a big part of those shows. She still loves “her men”. The ones she entertained there.

I vaguely recall at one show Bob called a certain service member on stage. Bob said to the guy “I happen to know your wife recently had a baby. How anxious are you to get home to see your wife and baby?” The soldier stammered and almost broke down trying to tell how much he missed his wife and wanted to see his child for the first time. Bob stopped him and said “son, turn around and tell her that.”
The kids wife and baby were on the side of the stage.
Water works began.
Standing Ovation.

Thanks for the memories Bob.
