Willie Nelson says he has stopped smoking because it almost killed him

... "I have abused my lungs quite a bit in the past, so breathing is a little more difficult these days and I have to be careful," Nelson, 86, said.

Nelson had to postpone the tail end of his tour in August due to breathing issues. He resumed the tour the next month.

"I started smoking cedar bark, went from that to cigarettes to whatever," Nelson told KSAT. "And that almost killed me."

Now, he says, he's more conscientious about his health.

"I don't smoke anymore -- take better care of myself."

Next year will be 25 years since I quit smoking. I never did cigarettes. My preference was for a pipe or cigar and only one or at most two a day. I still miss it.

Great song written by Willie Nelson:

“Funny How Time Slips Away,” sung By Jimmy Elledge

Okay; at 86 he finally decides to wake up. Shoulda switched to brownies and cookies 50 years ago.

The left has always told us that marijuana smoke does no damage to the lungs and contains no carcinogens.

"They say it is never too late to quit!"

My sister stopped smoking because she had 3 aneurysms in her head. One was so bad it caused her eye to turn in. They tied off the inner carotid artery, which stopped the flow to two of the aneurysms. She had to have surgery to straighten her eye. Five years later she was diagnosed with lung cancer. Everyone in my family smoked but me. Both my parents, and this one sister died of lung cancer. My father was 72. My mother and sister were both 69. My only brother died of a massive heart attack at 51. He had stopped smoking after he had his first heart attack at age 48. My oldest sister had stopped smoking years before due to her being placed in an adult assisted living home. She died at the age of 74 of a stroke. I'm 72 and the last one left. I don't expect to live to be 90. Bad genes.

The dude’s 86. He has already had a long and fulfilling life even though he toked every day for decades.

If not smoking weed anymore gives him an extra year or two to live, that’s great. Besides he can always use edibles to get happy.

I’m amazed he’s still touring. He should be retired. Maybe he needs the money...

I'm sorry for your loss. My Mom's been gone since 1990, and I still miss her a great deal.

My youngest son, aged 48 has smoked since he was a teenager. This past April he had to have surgery for cancerous polyps in his colon. They took out two sections, and a bunch of lymph nodes. They also found a nodule on his lung, did a biopsy, and thankfully it was benign. He had chemo treatments every two weeks, from the early part of May to November 1st. His last scan was clear, but he's having residual neuropathy pain in his hands and feet. His doctor told him it could take up to three months for it to recede. He can't go back to work until the pain goes away. In the meantime, he still smokes. Not as much as he used to, but it kills me knowing that he hasn't been able to quit. I live in New York State. He lives in Indiana, so there's nothing I can do about it. I visited him in October for a couple of weeks, and simply told him that I didn't want to outlive my children. His older brother never smoked.

I smoked, quite 10 years ago. Felt worse after quitting :) Mom quit a year after me. Horrible habit, I quit many times between 1989-1995, should have stayed quit... One of my brothers smokes and chews, hope he quits before he has problems.

I just could not wait to find out for myself
Don’t knock it ‘til you tried it, well, I tried it my friend
And I’ll never smoke weed with Willie again

I learned a hard lesson in a small Texas town
He fired up a fat boy and passed him around
The last words, that I spoke before they tucked me in
Was, I’ll never smoke weed with Willie again

I’ll never smoke weed with Willie again
My parties all over before it begins
You can pour me some old whiskey river my friend
But, I’ll never smoke weed with Willie again

I hopped on his old bus, the honey suckle rose
The party was Vegas it was after the show
Alone in the front lounge with just me and him
With one parting puff grim creeper set in

I’ll never smoke weed with Willie again]
My parties all over before it begins
You can pour me some old whiskey river my friend
But, I’ll never smoke weed with Willie again

Now we’re passing the guitar and telling good jokes
I know ones a-comin’ ‘cause I’m smelling smoke
No, I do not partake, I just let it pass by
With a smile on my face and a great contact high

I’ll never smoke weed with Willie again
My parties all over before it begins
You can pour me some old whiskey river my friend
But, I’ll never smoke weed with Willie again

In the fetal position with drool on my chin
I messed up and smoked weed with Willie again

It took me getting mouth cancer to quit. I’m recovering from the surgery, have a hard time eating and talking. Smoking is a bad addiction and hard to break, but definitely not worth what I’m going through now.

They quote WN as saying he’s “quitting smoking”. It doesn’t mention him saying “quit smoking weed”. He does mention cigarettes in a negative way, but says marijuana was a life saver. I wonder if he’s talking about quitting cigarettes rather than weed.

Why? He's outlived far healthier people.

He's 86 and worth $25 million. Whatever he's done so far has worked just fine.

He’s 86. Things might have “almost killed him”, but he’s hung around for quite a while regardless.
