Some areas of it have gotten bad. I read about a housing community called A Pocono Country Place in the town of Tobbyhanna. After 9/11, a lot of people from poorer parts of NYC (particularly Brooklyn and the Bronx) began moving there due to the lower housing costs and lower crime. They would actually spend 3 hours or so a day commuting to and from the city. Of course, they brought the crime with them. Because of the long commutes, teens were often left unsupervised for several hours, making it easy for them to cause trouble. The community has been referred to as The Ghetto in the Woods by some residents. Wow.
We vacationed in the Poconos - once.
We didn't like it.
It is a largely poor area, with a "soak the tourists" mentality.
