The USC band has apologized for playing during an on-field tribute to California defensive back Bryce Turner, who died earlier this year
Turner, a former St. John Bosco standout and Long Beach City College transfer, had just finished his second season with the Golden Bears when he died in January after suffering a medical emergency during a non-team workout. He was 19.

Was a music major in college and one of the problems with football bands is that they are not briefed always about actions on the field when they are there. And since there is no line to the band from the press box or the field operations, things slip by.

I don't understand the connections of events and exactly what mistakes were made.
what was the “medical emergency”? Maybe the Cal players knew what it was and thought USC was stuffing it in their face...when USC probably thought it was a tribute. But if USC played something like “another one bites the dust” I could see why Cal is angry...Somebody knows something about the unfortunate player...maybe it was a congenital heart problem...shows up in a lot of athletes at age 20 or so.

What difference does it make what they played?
The young man is dead. The school brought his parents and classmates together for a memorial.
The USC band played continuously throughout the memorial service. What difference does it make what they played?

Back in high school (1980’s), each band was limited to a 15 minute half-time show. If they went over their team was penalized.
If Cal wanted to do a tribute they should have done it during their own team’s half-time show.
This was simply bad communication. Apology is classy. Stuff happens, and nothing sounds intentional.

It would not surprise me if the SC band was banned from the next Cal game. Similar has happened to the Stanford band when they misbehave.

As much as I do not like a couple of the ditties the USC band plays incessantly, no way in the world would the band director do this on purpose. He probably feels horrible about it, and everyone should accept his sincere apology. Go Huskies!
