Very informative video!
Things you wouldn’t think to ask till after the purchase.

We have a gas stove, have had them off and on over the years. Gas grills are simple--use mine in middle of winter, just shovel off the snow. A steak on the grill is only way to go. Ours has a hot plate on side. Used it in Northern Virginia years ago when the power was knocked out by ice storm and snow dropping branches on power lines that the local power company was too cheap to keep clear (or move underground).

I've assumed most people have gas grills. Wonder what the percentage is across the US.

I’ve tried freeze dried banana, corn and apple slices.
Good snack food. Lightweight as well.

I recall my first generator. It was a monsterous anvil of a machine and roared like an enraged Lion. I used it for airbrush painting and sign painting decades ago.

All I've got to say is you may need to visit some prepper sites. It's called a "Bug-Out Bag" and you can purchase Hand Crank Radios and hand crank lamps. I'm sure it would be worth your time. Stay safe!

Duct Tape! I forgot to pack the duct tape. I see the Bug Out Bag has all of the basics.

You ever think of a backup generator?

so 1990's

a few thousand amazon AA rechargeables and a few hundred harbor freight solar units.       requires sunlight, space and help.

We have power outages now and then—I have a folding sterno stove and several packs of sterno. Got it on Amazon. Walmart also has the sterno cans. Pretty Cheap and will fit your bug out bag. Works great to heat up soup or water for coffee.

We also have a rocket stove that uses twigs from the yard. A handful of twigs will cook an entire meal with after dinner coffee. I have a coleman camping stove 2 burner—haven’t used it in years—don’t like the fuel.

If you don’t want to deal with bottled gas, you can use tea-light candles in your oven (put half a dozen tealights in a pie pan and adjust the racks on your oven so tealights are right beneath the grid your food pan is on - note: use unscented candles). Works just like low to medium burner heat.

Now, if your apartment has a sunny spot like a balcony, here’s a down and dirty solar oven made out of a cardboard (pizza) box, some plastic wrap or freezer baggie, some newspaper and some foil. Good for veggies. And when the power comes back on, you can just toss it.

p.s., tuna gets old, you might try some deviled ham, chicken or meat spread, the stuff that comes in little tins with the devil on them. Usually enough for two sandwiches.

Get gorilla tape. It’s strong, good stick. Prepper sights are the go to. Lots of little stoves that use small pieces of wood. Walmart sells heartwood for starting a fire. Small pieces with other wood would get it going. You said apartment, thought maybe that would limit you but hope you get it figure so it’s not too bad. Take care.

You are right about the tuna—I love tuna, but also there’s the mercury, so I don’t eat it or canned Salmon more than once a week, usually less.

Don’t forget DAK Hams. I also keep a stock of Peanut and Almond Butter and Canned Boston Brown Bread and Pork and beans.

During the winter, I can Beef Roasts and Chicken Breasts when they go on sale. They taste better and are cheaper than what the stores have in cans.

Underwood Deviled Ham comes to mind.
The cans used to be wrapped in white paper.

Mre’s come with a heater depending on the food. Works good in a pinch. Other then that you can start a small coal fire. Use a couple coals in a homemade rocket stove, need kindling and supplements. Frankly a bag of charcoal from the store could last two months if you use it this way and are cooking for 3 or less people, with one hot meal a day.

Curious. How do you can chicken. Do you need a pressure canner? Sound like a good thing to do.

Yes, Duct Tape. I should have mentioned that most of the hand crank radios also have a USB charging port to keep your cell phone charged.
