Do they call this magic invention a ‘tree’? I bet it can even return oxygen back into the atmosphere.

Interesting.

But planting trees works fine, they absorb CO2 and release oxygen, while they thrive.

A solution to a nonexistent problem. CO2 is the limiting factor in photosynthesis. Increase carbon dioxide and plants fix more carbon, growing faster. Nature is remarkably resilient as created by God.

I always thought plants and trees were the most effective instruments to remove carbon-dioxide from air.

As the battery charges, an electrochemical reaction takes place at the surface of each of a stack of electrodes. These are coated with a compound called polyanthraquinone, which is composited with carbon nanotubes. The electrodes have a natural affinity for carbon dioxide and readily react with its molecules in the airstream or feed gas, even when it is present at very low concentrations.

Or you could plant a tree.

Why not just plant a tree. Maples give off thousands of seeds each year.

Instead of using a giga joule of energy to capture a ton of carbon from the air, a tree captures carbon by converting sunlight energy to sugar instead of that energy all going to heat. A tree cools the earth, a power generation plant to run this carbon capture machine generates heat and CO2 as a by product.

A tree seed is free, MIT needs to beat that price point.

I’d plant an apple tree.

“Alternatively, the pure carbon dioxide stream could be compressed and injected underground for long-term disposal, or even made into fuel through a series of chemical and electrochemical processes. “

generating the energy to do any of that probably emits several tons of CO2 into the atmosphere for every ton compressed and injected or converted into fuel ...

there’s no free lunch in physics and chemistry ...

Seems like a lot of work and expensive materials to get some co2, when The Almighty has already perfected the process in trees.
