Japanese Emperor Naruhito formally proclaimed his ascendancy to the throne on Tuesday in a centuries-old ceremony attended by dignitaries from more than 180 countries, pledging to fulfil his duty as a symbol of the state.
Naruhito became emperor and his wife Masako became empress on May 1 in a brief ceremony, but Tuesday's 'Sokui no Rei' was a more elaborate ritual at the royal palace in which he officially announced his change in status to the world.
'I swear that I will act according to the constitution and fulfil my responsibility as the symbol of the state and of the unity of the people,' the 59-year-old declared, his voice slightly hoarse, in front of about 2,000 guests, including Britain's Prince Charles.

The idea of human royalty is ridiculous.
It’s simply another form of dictatorship in world history.
I recently finished a history of Japan. Not sure I know more now than I did before reading it. A very convoluted and strange story.
To misquote Churchill’s description of Russia, Japan is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma.
I was living in Japan in 1989 when Emperor Hirohito died. The entire nation pretty much shut down for 3-4 days. Quite the event.
My folks and I lived there in the 1950s.
I recall the marriage of the new emperor’s father.
The US Army did a live play by play of the parade on FEN Radio.
Freedom that looks good on paper, but yas still got a king!
It was once; but, at this point in time they are "figureheads" and nothing more.
Tell it to the democrats, they have been elevating their kind to royalty ever since JFK's daddy bought him the presidency.
