Midway: Second World War II-era Japanese carrier apparently found in Pacific (Akagi or Soryu)

Deep-sea explorers and historians on Sunday announced they apparently found a second World War II-era Japanese aircraft carrier that sank during the Battle of Midway.

A review of sonar data captured Sunday showed either the Japanese carrier Akagi or the Soryu resting in nearly 18,000 feet of water in the Pacific Ocean more than 1,300 miles northwest of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Vulcan Inc. director of undersea operations Rob Kraft said.

The researchers used an autonomous underwater vehicle, or AUV, equipped with sonar to find the ship. The vehicle had been out overnight collecting data, and the image of a warship appeared in the first set of readings on Sunday morning.

Interesting. It was only a couple hundred miles away from Midway when it sank.

The Japanese had launched at least airstrike against the airfield there, iirc.

Soryu, Hiryu, Kaga, and Akagi are all there somewhere. It maybe why we are here and who we are. We, the US have one there too. A tough time for pilots and sailors from both sides. Freedom ain’t free. RIP

The book “Broken Sword” was long and a bit tedious, but great history on the battle.

Until now, only one of the seven ships that went down in the air-and-sea battle — five Japanese vessels and two American ships — had been found.

Amazing!

This is the “Research Vessel Petrel, Commissioned by philanthropist Paul G. Allen. The Petrel seeks to locate and investigate historically significant shipwrecks and underwater ecosystems.”

They have done brilliant work finding WW2 ships and subs. If you have an Instagram account, the Petral can be followed.

Thanks I’ve read several. One was a Dawn Like Thunder. The whole event was so wide ranging. I’ve read Neptune’s Inferno , Last Stand of The Tin Can Sailors, With The Old Breed, and on and on. What I’ve came away with is a lot of respect for our countrymen who served all these years. I paid no attention when I was in. Now I look at where we came from and it’s amazing. The USA has been here just a little over 200 years, but our patriots blood has spilled over a lot of this planet. Freedom Ain’t Free is a fact.

"The Japanese had launched at least airstrike against the airfield there"

It was a bit more than an airstrike. The Japanese planned to overrun the atoll in order to deny the US major sea operations west of there. The US learned of the attack after breaking the Japanese naval code, and prepared the ambush to prevent a Japanese victory.

The US Navy sunk all four Japanese carriers involved in the operation, at the cost of just one US carrier. The loss of the carriers, and more importantly, the aircraft and pilots, denied the Japanese of any chance to significantly rebuild their carrier air power. This was a major turning point in the War in the pacific.

“... 18,000 feet of water in the Pacific Ocean ...”

Damn... I guess only ROV submersibles can down to that depth... and then again, maybe not. That’s crushing pressure.

I guess that is the definition of “the abyss”...
