A storm will strengthen rapidly and bring a dose of drenching rain, high winds and even some high-elevation snow to the northeastern United States into Thursday.
The latest indications are the storm will strengthen at a fast enough pace into Thursday to be classified as a bomb cyclone. The barometric pressure has to fall at least 24 millibars, or 0.71 of an inch of Mercury, in 24 hours for the bomb cyclone criteria to be met.

This could interrupt the baseball playoff games scheduled for New York.
Off topic, but baseball rolls the dice every year, by pushing the world series later and later into the autumn. Bad baseball weather is very predictable for this time of year in most of the country, but the people who run baseball don’t care about that.
Currently in the middle of the “bomb cyclone”
I used to call it a rainy day.
We need to demand the UN outlaw ‘Meteorological bomb[s].’
I callz it a Great Lakes hurricane, and nobody’s gonna change my mind.
Not saying they just made it up, but the term doesn't appear to have much of a history.
Sort of like the "polar vortex" they were throwing around a year or so ago.
It is called scary word scrabble. We had a “bomb cyclone” last spring and we survived.
Use or abuse of language not to inform the public but to excite in a negative way!
Today’s game is postponed.
The storm will be over by tomorrow morning.
This is the equivalent of a BOOM in a headline.
And what we are getting on the East Coast over the next couple of days is NORMAL weather for late October.
I've lived in the Northeast much of my life and you can count on a number of "northeasters" in any given year from about October to March. I would say 6-8 big coastal storms in a season is about the average for the Northeast. I might actually be on the low side.
Really hate when someone panics on our behalf. We’re in NJ, it’s gonna rain, and might be breezy....that’s all.
