Pulling the Plug on PG&E
The Nation ^ | October 15, 2019 | Johanna Bozuwa

Earlier this month, nearly 2 million Californians were hurt by a “planned” power shutoff by Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), a private utility company. The shutoff was part of a botched wildfire management strategy to prevent transmission lines neglected by the company for years from catching fire. Customers received only 24 hours’ notice for a shutoff that lasted up to four days, during which grocery stores sat empty, cleared of basic supplies, and schools were closed. The residents of Paradise, California, displaced just one year ago by massive fires that destroyed their town and killed dozens, found themselves without electricity once again. Thirty thousand of those affected have medical needs that require access to electricity, putting them in harm’s way.

Replace PG&E by municipal owned decentralized power utilities. If the system is decentralized and "green" what happens if the wind stops blowing or the sun is not shining in your area?

They are complaining that they only got 24 hours advance notice?

What a bunch of idiots, who knew much more in advance that the wind was going to be blowing so hard they had to turn the electricity off?

Too bad that the average American does not realize that if the Democrats seize power, the era of reliable, relatively cheap electricity will be over. Without reliable, cheap electricity, an economy withers.

Private utility company heavily regulated by the state.

The state created the situation and then passed the buck to someone else.

Energy in general. They’ll mess over fracking and cheap natural gas, too.

“Killed dozens” I believe the number was 84 to 87 people. Its those pesky facts that get softened and forgotten...

The loss of life and property was preventable. PG&E and the state agencies that were supposed to monitor and maintain the land are also as guilty.

Maybe they should put Hunter Biden on the board. He knows nothing about electric production and transmission so he would be a fine candidate.

PG&E should sue the Sierra Club and other enviro-whackos who have made it costly and impossible to clear trees and brush under their power lines.

They’ll also destroy our agricultural system, leaving us freezing in the winter, sweating in the summer, and starving all the time.

They will not give more than 24 hours notice of a power cutoff. More warning time will allow more time to object and some judge will get involved. What’s that term? Easier to say your sorry than to ask permission.

Talk of buying out Portions of PGE is BS.

PGE paid our county’s water district millions to give us one of one of their power generating facilities (hydro project 184)

No one would buy their transmission facilities they are in such bad shape.

Not a word of blame for CPUC abd CalEPA who actually run PG&E.

PG&E can’t sneeze without getting approval from CPUC, let alone preemptively shutting off power to millions.

re: “If the system is decentralized and “green” what happens if the wind stops blowing”

OF course, this rag, “The Nation” doesn’t have (or hire) any engineers to be “on staff”, so, they really REALLY don’t know ...

The judge’s order from January said as much (power was to be cut, regardless); they’ve had since then to prepare ...

The Nation

Might as well say “The Socialist Rag”.

Minus the $2.8 billion extra that PG&E has paid buying, in accordance with legal mandates, “renewable power” fulfilling state set quotas, while cheaper electricity is/was available on the open wholesale market from the grid, they could have afforded the infrastructure maintenance and improvements that would have improved their position vis-a-vis wild fires.

Everyone fails to mention that Gavin Newsom signed new wildfire laws that REQUIRES utilities around the state to shut down the power in windy situations.

“PG&E has been the region’s main electricity provider since 1852...”

1852?

Right.
