Yes, I’ve always wondered who the first person was who said “hmmm, the sun has risen just fine for my whole life, but maybe it won’t rise tomorrow unless we feed it blood”.

Most likely it was just some ruler who wanted to exert dominance over some people group. It became institutionalized and grew from there as more and more people’s positions became dependent on it.
