An FBI employee who texted with her in-house lover about blocking Donald Trump's presidential ambitions wrote in 2016 of a 'quid pro quo' with the State Department to hide the fact that an email found on Hillary Clinton's home-brew email server was considered classified.
Lisa Page fretted in the closing days of the presidential campaign about a pending Freedom of Information Act disclosure of a discussion between top State and Justice Department officials about the potential trade.
Under the arrangement, the State Department would have given the FBI more legal attachés for its overseas division in exchange for altering the basis for keeping one of the Clinton emails from the public.
At the time, the email in question was exempt from FOIA requests because it was classified – a fact that was ultimately made public. The FBI had asked the State Department to 'change the basis of the FOIA withhold [decision] ... from classified to something else.'

I realise that it’s been a while since the last Presidential election but I vaguely remember someone campaigning on a promise to drain the swamp.

Oh yes he did. He said so at the outset of his campaign. As a NY developer he was quite aware that the biggest danger to a bankrupt project was all the folks who wanted a piece of the action for doing nothing productive. You only look at DC, money in an productivity out and you immediately know how big and corrupt the swamp is.
The details of how it happens are irrelevant. We have all been educuted on UkraineScam - aid to Ukraine that flows through US entities to ensure that litte aid actually got to the Ukraine and maximum dollars went into the palms of greasy american politicians. Like a public version of the Clinton Foundation and Haiti aid.
We might be surprised how much he cleans house after he's reelected. He has nothing to lose then. More freedom do things that might otherwise hinder his reelection efforts.
Trump's a very smart player. He knows getting reelected is his primary goal in order to be able to finish draining the swamp.

I agree. I cringed when President Trump kept using that word. Then I read that Page was particularly humiliated by the exposure of her affair (she’s married). So she’s not embarrassed to betray her country or conspire to remove a sitting president, but to be exposed as an adulterer really bothered her. I think that’s why the President used that word and now the media has picked it up to spice up their reportage.

Our president has been fighting off attacks for the past 2-3 years.
