SAGINAW, MI — An anti-abortion group is planning a demonstration with “graphic videos” on Saginaw Valley State University’s campus Friday, Oct. 11.
The group called Created Equal, which argues that abortion is a form of age discrimination, is traveling to college campuses, high schools and facilities where abortions are performed in Michigan, Texas and Georgia, according to a news release the group issued.
While at SVSU, the group plans to show “graphic videos of living human fetuses being aborted via a JumboTron depicting the gruesome reality of abortion and to engage students in conversation about this human injustice,” the release states.
SVSU spokesman J.J. Boehm said university officials “are aware of the request and preparing for the group to be on campus this Friday.”
“They will have access to space in our central campus courtyard, which is consistent with what we have done for other organizations with similar requests. As a public university, we support the free expression of ideas and the First Amendment,” Boehm said.
“We have followed our normal preparations for the use of space on campus, which includes communication with Created Equal to ensure we have a common understanding. In addition, SVSU staff members have been in contact with individuals at both Oakland and Eastern Michigan universities, where Created Equal appeared earlier this week.”
Boehm said, to his knowledge, this group has not visited SVSU before.
In a statement, Mark Harrington, president of Created Equal, said, “A preborn child is no less human than a born child."
In addition to SVSU, Oakland University and Eastern Michigan University, the group also planned to visit Ferris State University, according to the release.
The Associated Press reported in September that the number and rate of abortions across the United States have plunged to their lowest levels since the procedure became legal nationwide in 1973.
One reason for the decline is that fewer women are becoming pregnant, likely because of increased accessibility of contraception since 2011 when the Affordable Care Act required most private health insurance plans to cover contraceptives without out-of-pocket costs, according to the report.
