Tales of Impeachment: Richard Nixon and Donald Trump
Self | Oct 6, 2019 | Self

Posted on 10/06/2019 9:35:12 AM PDT by Chainmail

When Richard Nixon took office in 1969, the Left was somewhat new to the art of attempting to remove a president from office but they had some real advantages: they had all of the media on their side (only three TV networks and all or most of the newspapers) and they had a fully mature organization formed to help our North Vietnamese enemy to win.

The Leftists hated Nixon with every ounce of passion in them: Nixon made his mark as a Congressman by taking down the Communist operative in the State Department, Alger Hiss and defeating the Left’s darling, Helen Gahagan Douglas to win his seat in the House.

Those of you who are my contemporaries will remember that from even before he was sworn in, he was attacked in every single editorial, every TV commentary, every political cartoon, every day, day after day through both of his terms in office. But Nixon was a gentleman. No matter what silly caricature of him that was made, or false rumor, or foul calumny, Nixon stayed above it all. He relaxed the Cold War with his ground-breaking overtures to China and the Soviet Union, he supported Israel during the ’73 War, he dealt with the hellish Vietnam War, he ended the draft - he even appeared on TV to lampoon himself on the comedy program “Laugh In” but nothing he did could overcome the unremitting hatred of the loser Left.

He was finally wrenched from his office by a carefully stage-managed “scandal” in which no one died, no money was earned, no advantage given to the enemy – but the Watergate “crimes” were trickled out in inflated form, day after day, until the Left had him where they wanted him and his own Republican Party ran away from him. The Democrats/Left succeeded in their campaign and Nixon resigned, rather than disgrace the office through impeachment and shortly after, the enemy won the war in Vietnam as the Left had planned. Now we have exactly the same tactics being applied to President Trump (and as they were applied to some lesser degree against Presidents Ford, Reagan, Bush I and II) – but this time we have other ways of getting our information. Thank Heaven for the internet and Rush Limbaugh and maybe Fox News.

President Trump is a different breed of cat and he fights! His manner and techniques may not be courtly and refined but swings back when he’s hit and lets everyone know why. It’s up to us this time to keep him where he is and to help him fight back. When our representatives support the attackers or just fail to support Mr. Trump, we need to let them know that we stand behind our elected president.

When editorial writers attack him, we need to write Letters to the Editors back to let them and their readers know that we are watching and support President Trump.

The lessons of what happened to Richard Nixon should show us what we have to do to avert yet another disgraceful coup by the Left. Today is even more critical to our country's future than it was 50 years ago - we need to remember that our wholehearted support is critical to keeping this president where he needs to be to keep America great.

Some of my thoughts about what is going on now, compared to what happened all those years ago.

You forgot one important point - they first got the Vice President out of office.

I like that we have a tradition here of making vanity posts with an accompanying contribution. It is a valuable feature.

I appreciate your thoughts very much. Thanks!

I have never seen it proved that there is anything undignified about this president. I assume I am too undignified myself to judge such things, or I missed something. You do not have to be nice to a deadly contagion, you must burn it out. Those who attack his style are lying if they say they are not in sympathy with the enemy.

Please correct me. Being “presidential” means pleasing Rinos!

Vice President Agnew was involved in a separate scandal, dating back to his days as a Maryland governor and county executive, if I recall correctly.

And Gerald Ford became the first Vice President to fill the office under the terms of the 25th amendment.

And when Ford became president, he selected Nelson Rockefeller to be the his Vice President.

Helen Gahagan Douglas, Nixon said “She’s pink right down to her underwear!”

Except that President Nixon engaged in the coverup. If he had not done that, he would have served out his second term.

Of course he was, but was he any different then previous Presidents and Vice Presidents? My point is that they targeted Agnew before they went after Nixon. Coincidence or part of the plan?

It may well have been part of the plan, to first take out Agnew, then go after Nixon. It’s quite possible that is what was going on.

You are correct but President Nixon never came close to what Clinton and Obama have done. I also suspect that the GOP,even then, did not make a substantial effort to protect Nixon as the Democrats always protect their own. Nixon loved America. Clinton and Obama love money and power and should have been impeached and kicked out of office for treason at the very least.

“Coverup” was the Left’s perjorative framing of the events. There is no evidence that President Nixon had any advance knowledge of the Watergate break in or even who was actually behind it.

He was constantly on the defensive - but President Trump isn’t one to sit back and hope for the best.

It’s really not that simple. The whole Watergate break-in had the fingerprints of the CIA all over it, and Nixon was misled by John Dean, his White House counsel.

An excellent book on the subject is “Silent Coup” by Len Colodny.

The records of Ukrainian officials indicate they expected Trump to engage in coverup for Manafort.

Nope...they found out Trump doesn’t do cover-ups. When Trump’s lousy lawyer asked about cash or check for Stormy Daniels he said check, that he wanted a record and for everything to stay legal. Trump likes everything recorded and on the ledger. That is why they find it so difficult to hang everything on him...he actually tries to follow the law. I think Trump has a birdie whispering into his ear.

Article 2, Clause 5:
The House of Representatives .... shall have the sole Power of Impeachment.

This means action by the WHOLE House by a vote, not by decrees from Queen Nancy, Princess Omar, Princess 'MFer' Tlaib, Princess Ocasio-Cortez, Grand Inquisitor Nadler, or Torquemada Schiff.

Nancy is playing with fire.

The coverup involved the missing minutes from a tape recording done in the Oval Office. Nixon was indeed guilty of obstruction of justice. This was after the break in had occurred and probably he was not aware of it untill after the fact. Poor judgement on his part.
It does however pale in comparison to what Democrats have done ever since.

You play into the hands of the Left by comparing the two.

NPR this morning was all over the “similarities.”

Richard Nixon was an American patriot and a hero, taken down by the lies of the Left.

You play into the Left’s revisionist history with your comment.

Simple: the Left used the same playbook to take down Nixon - and defeat our support of the South Vietnamese.

They ‘ve updated things a bit to try to take down Donald Trump and part of that campaign is to smear him like they smeared Nixon.

By accepting their lie that Nixon was evil and guilty, you perpetuate their lies and allow them to spread that smear to this president
