I remember when that happened, which doesn’t mean that it wasn’t a really long time ago. :)

By the way. Did you see the artiicle about how some horror movies use music from the 13th century?

That's about how far back you have to go to avoid paying royalties.

That is a fact, I once tried to sell some old world coins as valuable because of the dates. I was immediately told that they were “brand new” in comparison to what was actually considered as valuable by age. Coins from before our country was even a nation are worthless in age over there. lol

Seeing that nobody knew it existed, I’d say about 700 years..............

Good thing she wasn’t a very good housekeeper or she’d have sprayed it with 409 the past 50 years.

Yep, until you get the roman coins you are just in the modern era.

I’m sure there are religious pictures all over the houses of religious and artistic Frenchwomen; but I was concerned about the damage a kitchen atmosphere could do to a painting like that.

Thank you. As you can see from my post, the only connection I have with art history is having seen pictures of various paintings in history books.

Do you know if that fresco has been properly restored now or did the poor attempt destroy the work?

I hope you don’t have them hanging right over a hot plate, as this lady reportedly did ;-)

No, it has become a profitable tourist attraction.

Because it became an internet meme, the town and church are profiting from increased tourism. The painting was not considered important before it was “restored,” so it probably will never be properly fixed.

"Must be a fascinating story."

I've heard that the Nazi occupiers during WWII stole much art work from occupied countries to take back to Germany.

Perhaps this item was stolen by Nazis and somehow ended up in this kitchen. Alternatively, perhaps some French patriots arranged for this work to be in the kitchen to prevent it from reaching Germany.
