Cybersecurity expertise might be the key to a generous salary, according to a new ranking of company salaries.
Palo Alto Networks tops a list of the 25 highest paying companies in America from career site Glassdoor, coming in with a median salary of $170,929. That puts it ahead of Nvidia, where the average employee takes home $170,068 per year.
Here's how the rest of the Top 10 shakes out, with median total salaries listed.

Tech companies dominate the list and many are based in the San Francisco Bay area, which could be part of the reason they're as high as they are. Real estate prices in that region are sky high and competition for qualified workers is intense.
Despite the company payrolls, the highest paying job in America isn't in the tech field. Health care dominates the top five.
Glassdoor says physicians earn the most, with a median base salary of $193,415. (That's down slightly from last year.) Pharmacy managers come in second, earning $144,768 per year. They're followed by dentists ($142,478) and Pharmacists ($126,438).

While the survey (compiled from user reported salaries, which exclude C-level jobs) focuses on pay, Glassdoor, which puts out the list each year, says increasingly, that's not the most important thing to prospective employees.
"Company culture and values, trust in senior leadership and career opportunities matter most when it comes to keeping employees satisfied in their jobs," the site said. "So, while salary is a factor to consider when determining where to work, it shouldn’t be the only information used to make that important decision."

Gilead Sciences is really the only “tech” company on that list. The rest are software companies that use technology.

Around where I live if you have an advanced degree in biology, chemistry, or pharmacology you will have no problem finding a job with a base salary of about $190,000. If you have a liberal arts degree you can get a job as a barista or bartender.
I’m curious if those salaries include VP and C-level management. I’d like to see the average of rank and file and through middle management.

The big secret is all these companies outsource much of their labor at really low wages. The median $170k wage is all the top key folks.
Janitors, clerks, production folks middle management and ran k and file etc are outsourced or contracted to other companies for $40k per year or less jobs.
All a big lie..what they do.
That is exactly the point I was about to make when I started to read the company names. When I then read the above from the article. 8>)
They are referred to as tech companies because they are traded on the nasdaq exchange.

been in tech for decades and your average mid tier salesperson or upper mid tier engineer/developer/manager makes well over what is listed below.
The other side of that coin is it’s not easy, it’s incredibly demanding, and very few can cut the lifestyle long term without destroying their personal lives.
Do they all live in trailer houses outside Palo Alto?
I am not sure that is true, just looked up median salary for a Chemistry PhD is about $62K, slightly less for a Biology PhD, and around $70K for PhD Pharmacology. However, maybe you live in a really high cost of living area.
Too bad the NEA doesn’t tell you this in High School or preferably much earlier.

Designing microprocessors pays much better.
VP and C-Level are much higher, around $300k or more. This is mostly rank and file engineering ranks, likely an average of 10yrs experience.
Microsoft’s major revenue stream is from software sales. They make very little off of advertising, unlike the socials and Google.
