Tribe of Dan: Sons of Israel, or of Greek Mercenaries Hired by Egypt?

Samson the Greek? 3,000-year-old archaeological finds at Tel Dan suggest that the Danites were Aegean soldiers hired by Canaan's Egyptian overlords to keep order.

The Tribe of Dan, one of the 12 "Israelite tribes," may have started as no such thing. New archaeological evidence suggests that the Danites originated with mercenaries hired from the Aegean and Syria by the Egyptian overlords of Canaan to keep order.

According to the Bible, after the Israelites conquered Canaan, the land was split between the tribes – with the exception of the tribe of Dan. Bitter at their lot, the tribe went northward, conquered and destroyed the city of Laish (also called Leshem), then rebuilt it and renamed it after their ancestor (Judges 18:1-29).

"And the coast of the children of Dan went out too little for them: therefore the children of Dan went up to fight against Leshem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and possessed it, and dwelt therein, and called Leshem, Dan, after the name of Dan their father" (Joshua 19:47).

Well, Dan was one of Jacob’s sons, and his tribe is descended from that. They migrated from Egypt with the Exodus, and spent 40 years in the wilderness (IE, they were not Greek).

But thanks for playing...

I don’t remember where, but I read speculation that the Tribe of Dan went to Ireland prior to the arrival of the Celts. The people who were replaced by the Celts were the Tuatha De Danann (The Peoples of the Goddess Danu). They were described as small and olive skinned.

“Timeo Danaos et dona ferentes,” - Vergil (Aeneid).
“I fear Greeks, even bearing gifts.”

Surely the Danai and the Tribe of Dan are not the same?

The article is nonsense, of course; most likely intended to undermine the Bible. However, it's interesting that the Philistines, Samson's great nemeses were of Greek origin. Obviously the Tribe of Dan had much dealings with them which may contribute to the historical confusion.

Humorous revisionist history from God-hating Haaretz.

“they were not Greek”

Jewish historian Josepheus claims the Trojans were Jewish.

Roman historian Diodorus said that there were three Israelite exoduses from Egypt; one going to the Greek isles.

Interesting that the Tribe of Dan is not listed as part of 144,000 in the Book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ. So we have the Lost Tribes and the really Lost Tribe. 😏

Jewish tradition indicates that perhaps 80% of Hebrews didn’t leave Egypt with Moses. The ones remaining may not have been well-liked and decided to go elsewhere.

Homer referred to the Trojans as Dardans. The idea of refugee Dardans fleeing the fall of Troy arriving in the Levant and becoming enemies of the Sea Peoples, Philistines, who were likely Mycenaen Greeks is not far fetched . That they may take up the religion of their new allies, the Tribe of Dan, is not far fetched either. Those were truly interesting times.

I agree, one must consider what’s outside the box with objectivity.

I don't believe Josephus claimed the Trojans were Jewish. He did claim that the shepherd-kings (Hyksos) were the Israelites, which isn't correct.
16. This is Manetho's account. And evident it is from the number of years by him set down belonging to this interval, if they be summed up together, that these shepherds, as they are here called, who were no other than our forefathers, were delivered out of Egypt; and came thence, and inhabited this country, three hundred ninety and three years before Danaus came to Argos. Although the Argives look upon him as their most ancient King. Manetho therefore bears this testimony to two points of the greatest consequence to our purpose: and those from the Egyptian records themselves. In the first place, that we came out of another country into Egypt: and that withal our deliverance out of it was so ancient in time, as to have preceded the siege of Troy almost a thousand years. But then, as to those things which Manetho adds, not from the Egyptian records; but, as he confesses himself, from some stories of an uncertain original, I will disprove them hereafter particularly, and shall demonstrate that they are no better than incredible fables.
I don't think Diodorus said there were three separate instances of Israelite Exodus from Egypt.

"Tribe of Dan went to Ireland ..."

Yes, and from there, they built tens of thousands of ox hide Currachs and migrated to N. America, which was then uninhabited and a quick easy hop across the N Atlantic, and they begat the American Indian race, who mostly destroyed themselves in an epic battle where a quarter of a million died, right on the back doorstep of Joseph Smith.

Any more questions?

“I don’t think Diodorus said there were three separate instances of Israelite Exodus from Egypt.”

You must have an extraordinary fascination for what you don’t think or don’t believe.

Josephus straight out said the Trojans were Jews in his writings which sort of ratifies what Diodorus wrote. They were not alone in their contention.
