ATLANTA (AP) — At a routine ultrasound when she was five months pregnant, Hevan Lunsford began to panic when the technician took longer than normal, then told her she would need to see a specialist.

Lunsford, a nurse in Alabama, knew it was serious and begged for an appointment the next day.
That’s when the doctor gave her and her husband the heart-wrenching news: The baby boy they decided to name Sebastian was severely underdeveloped and had only half a heart. If he survived, he would need care to ease his pain and several surgeries. He may not live long.
Lunsford, devastated, asked the doctor about ending the pregnancy.
“I felt the only way to guarantee that he would not have any suffering was to go through with the abortion,” she said of that painful decision nearly three years ago.
But the doctor said Alabama law prohibits abortions after five months. He handed Lunsford a piece of paper with information for a clinic in Atlanta, a roughly 180-mile (290-kilometer) drive east.
Lunsford is one of thousands of women in the U.S. who have crossed state lines for an abortion in recent years as states have passed ever stricter laws and as the number of clinics has declined.
Although abortion opponents say the laws are intended to reduce abortions and not send people to other states, at least 276,000 women terminated their pregnancies outside their home state between 2012 and 2017, according to an Associated Press analysis of data collected from state reports and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Yes, infanticide should be one of the main campaigning issues of the Democratic Party.
It will make people think a bit more before engaging in sex, especially unprotected sex. That is not a total win, but it sets the course in the right direction.
This horrific procedure never ceases to shock me that it’s still even up for debate.
People are that wicked.
Already now they are getting shuttle buses ready to get them out of state for an abortion. They did this pre roe, only now with the internet they are more organized with more money.
They may not be doing as many abortions but they will certainly try.
I just love the way the story starts off with a rare birth defect case, as if that is representative of all abortions.
To be complete, the article could have mentioned infant hospices, which serve women and babies who have fatal birth defects, allowing the woman to give birth without subjecting the infant to the agony of abortion. Then she can spend quality time with the infant before it dies.
But pro-aborts don’t want women, even those who have dying infants, to have a choice.
For the majority of women who abort, those who use abortion as their primary form of birth control, I think these laws might make them consider other, less cruel and lethal, forms of birth control.
Neither, because it is blocked from implementation by Roe v Wade.
We can’t pass laws for other states, or Chicago would be banning guns across the entire US.
But the cops SHOULD stop any such busses and make sure that they aren’t taking minors across state lines without their parents’ express consent.

Women going to other states to get abortions has no bearing on whether the residents of a state should decide to make abortion (or any other heinous practice) illegal in their own state. If the residents of adjoining or other states want to make their state a bloody Mecca for abortion and infanticide, that’s on them.

You make excellent points.
They couldn’t start out the story with someone who is having her second or third abortion because she won’t use birth control. The story has to be about a rare birth defect.
I thought about the hospice, too. Just because a woman gives birth to a baby with birth defects doesn’t mean that the baby has to be treated if the defects are incompatible with life.
Years ago, before I had children, I worked with someone whose wife was pregnant with their 3rd or 4th child. They found out during the pregnancy that the baby was anencephalic. She didn’t have an abortion but gave birth and they were able to spend the short time that the baby lived with him. I think that’s a very hard choice to make; I doubt anyone who has made that choice regrets it later.
Hedonists will actually move to other states.
This is why the left didn’t try to push the abortion agenda until the Supreme Court could be stacked to push Roe versus Wade through.
If the States can restrict abortion, and legalize or restrict drugs and booze as they choose then pretty soon hedonists concentrate themselves into enclaves. That’s how they increase the likelihood of finding more sexual partners for their dalliances.
In a Republic, this permanently cedes control of the upper house to family oriented monogamists.
Oh I can imagine some medieval type techniques they’d love to revel in with us if they could.
