Georgia hunter lands state record 700-pound alligator

Sept. 9 (UPI) -- A Georgia hunter set a new state record when he bagged a 700-pound, 14-foot-long alligator on Lake Eufala.

Derrick Snelson said he could tell there was a big one on his line when he was hunting last week on the lake in Quitman County and it took him and four others more than five hours to land the reptilian behemoth.

"It was just unbelievable. I really can't describe it. You need to see it," Snelson told WSB-TV.

Experts said Snelson's catch, which weighed in at 700 pounds and measured 14 feet long, is a new Georgia state record.

"We'll have it 'life-size' mounted," Snelson said. "I guess I'll have to build a house around it. It's going to be a monster laying on the living room floor for a while!"

Alligator season in Georgia starts in mid-August and runs through early October. Hunters must obtain special permits and the bag limit is one.

I would be thinking some boots and shows for myself and my wife.

Maybe a jacket.

I can’t imagine what having a gator that size mounted would cost. I would guess over $10K

That critter would be great for emotional support on their next flight

I never have understood why size makes it a better kill.

Doesn’t that just make them SLOWER?

"That critter would be great for emotional support on their next flight"

Well, I can see being able to make the seating accommodation OK, but the meal menu may be a problem... (However, just happened to think of a "deportation" alternative for the migrant-invader species...)

The hunter should sell it to a restaurant. Alligator tastes great.

Generally the critter is stronger, smarter and in this case more dangerous.

Fl has allowed hunting for longer which has ‘helped’ to deter some of the big ones. Alabama has produced large gators because they haven’t had hunting as long.

It was really a 500lb gator plus a 200lb gator hunter he ate before being caught. The extra weight slowed him down.

As long as he keeps the skin.

He has got to have that Alligator skin jacket and boots.

Oh, and the wife has to have an Alligator skin purse!

I’d love an alligator hide OWB holster for my Kimber 1911.

“Alabama has produced large gators because they haven’t had hunting as long.”

Skinny compared to FL gators.

The biggest was in New York City. It lived in the sewer system. I saw it in a movie late one night.

The big ones are just as fast as the smaller ones (maybe a little faster due to their greater strength), plus they’re stronger, and likely wilier since they’ve lived longer. I’m not even remotely familiar with hunting crocodilians of any kind, but I think I’d much rather hunt the smaller ones that are still dumb enough to grab at anything, haven’t experienced humans that much, and aren’t likely to be strong enough to pull me out of the boat or even swamp the boat itself.
