I read a romance novel once. It was a terrible experience, and soured me on reading new genres. So I stick with fantasy and SF, but change up things by reading some novels in French.
The best way is to never stop.
I am impatient about books now.
Perhaps it is the lifetime of heavy reading, I am a librarians dream.
In the past I wouild slog through a book because I had started it.
Now? If I cannot be immersed I stop, read the last chapter to see where it goes, and either see how it got there: ie there is some complexity and good writing, or I toss it aside.
These days if I bring home 5 books I may read two all the way through.
Bad writing poor plotting, lousy editing doesnt work for me.
In general, I agree with you. Especially since I love to thumb ahead and find out what happens later, which is a bit of a challenge on a kindle. But I have found that the kindle is great for reading foreign language books, since it has a built in dictionary, and I do not have to stop reading while I look up a word. I just press on the word, a definition comes up, and I can continue without interrupting the flow of reading.
how was it?
I never stopped.
But one way is find a used book store. You will be stunned by the number of books there are out there on all kinds of subjects.
New bookstores only have the latest and most popular. The used will have things you never knew existed.
Did you know that A.A. Milne (creator of Winnie the Pooh) wrote an adult mystery? It is pretty good.
I tend to read a lot in bed later on. Holding a book lying back is a LOT more work than the Kindle. Wondered If I would like it, but quickly grew used to it.

That sounds great. I no longer read in a foreign language, but I have been thinking of brushing up!
an online sourse of all the used bookstores in the world is alibris.com
I usually shop there to find what I want. Although they charge for shipping, the aggregate is usually less than Bezo’s hell site.
My hearing is so shot, no earplugs needed.
I will try to find them
I keep a book list going.
Wish there were book groups for men and women who love to read. locally all the book groups are run and peopled by leftist old ladies.
No 2 — “Crush your modem.”
I read 2-3 books a week. Only thing other than shooting that keeps me sane!
Oh yeah, I heard about that book, but then I forgot about it.
Indeed. And books on cassette before that. Books on tape have ruined me for...well, books.
Although I still haven't found a good audible book on Risk Management. Maybe I need a protégé.
I have a Kindle, and it’s great for traveling, but I still prefer actual books. For one thing, it’s easier to go from one part of a book to another just by turning pages, at least for me.
You’re right about the books piling up. We’ve been in the same house for over 15 years now, and have well over 6000 books. Not looking forward to moving.
The key is to pick good books
