Morning segment on Oklahoma City's KOCO-TV turns inappropriate
(Newser) – Things got awkward during a morning show segment on Oklahoma City's KOCO-TV Thursday as co-hosts Alex Housden and Jason Hackett chatted about a gorilla at the Oklahoma City Zoo. "Kind of looks like you," Housden said jokingly to Hackett at the end of the segment. "He kind of does, actually, yeah," Hackett replied in a tone USA Today describes as "hesitant." He laughed, too, notes Jay Connor at The Root: "The kind of laughter that black folks in white spaces know all too well. The kind of laughter that dissuades our rage and prevents us from going to jail. The kind of laughter that doubles as a prayer to the Lord for strength and forgiveness because you still have kids to feed. The kind of laughter that Housden didn’t deserve, but received anyway because America wouldn’t have it any other way." But outcry against Housden did ensue, particularly on Facebook where the clip was posted, and the next day, she issued an emotional apology.
"I said something yesterday that was inconsiderate, it was inappropriate, and I hurt people," she said on the show, offering her apologies not just to Hackett but to the entire community. Hackett, who described Housden as a close friend, accepted her apology. "The lesson here is that words matter," he said. "We have to understand the stereotypes, we have to understand each other’s backgrounds and the words that hurt, the words that cut deep. And we have to find a way to replace those words with love and words of affirmation." As Connor notes, however, many on Twitter were upset that Housden was allowed to keep her job. Some were calling for people to dial the station and demand she be fired.
That’s so ####ing bad...
I’m still laughing.
What? No watermelon?................
I used to work with this nice but HUGE guy, Shea. He weighed about 400.
One day while I was with 2 other workers, one of them asked me where Shea was.
We were on the 49th floor of Rockefeller plaza and I pointed to the empire state building.
They both tried SO HARD not to laugh but to no avail :)
On an episode of “Sanford & Son”, back in the early 70’s, Redd Foxes character, Fred is talking to one of his buddies about some neighborhood guys wife who was “so ugly, you could mash her face down in some dough and make gorilla cookies!”
We’ve gone backwards as a society............
I hope she is cute. If so, she will land on her feet.
This should be a minor faux paux, but in today’s culture it will get someone banished for life.
When I was in high school there was a guy with big ears whom everyone called ‘monkey’.....decades ago. I’m NOT at all in favor of unkind nick names of epithets.
Wait a minute.... doesn’t the left say that we all evolved from apes??
Fred used gorilla or worse to describe Esther all the time.
Some of the funniest moments on TV.
Their exchanges would never be tolerated today.
And if anyone had gone to HR and told them what I did I would have been let go.
I really wanted her to be ugly. She’s cute as a button. I give her a pass.
I watch All In The family and Sanford & Son almost every night.
I can’t believe how Fred made jokes about black people back then. He made jokes about the stereotypical blacks in every episode.
Self deprecating humor.
He even used the N word in a episode and so did Esther!.........
Remember back when the TV newscasters would look straight in the camera, read the news, finish a story, pass the baton to the weatherman who would give you the weather, pass to the Sports desk etc etc etc
The news would be reported and the show was over.
Long about late 60s, early 70s we found the the anchors were LIARS and were skewing the news and it sure took a lot to convince their ‘fans’....etc
Today, we need two chicks- VERY easy on the eyes, at least one minority of sorts, girl minority a bonus to station, the ‘white’ guy is now the anomaly
BUT
Today they have to put on the ‘proper’ face for a story, give their own personal opinion, discuss with the co host/anchor, banty back and forth about the family or whatever.
In a way guess it is necessary as the live ‘channels’ are starting with their first news at 4 and carrying it on till the ‘national news’ comes on in the 6 hour.
then 3 hours in the AM ....
I personally stopped the ‘National/World news’ when they started alerting us to what the news would be 3 days from now, ie news became a SHOW, with entertainment etc...
Damned it !!! Grow a Spine will Ya Lady...
It’s OK if THEY SAY OR DO IT...
The “not guilty” perp...
I went to her Fb page. Her husband looks gay and he is ..well lets say he really, really married up.
Didnt they call Bush a monkey? Chimp not gorilla. Thats ok.
Chimpy McBushitler.
