[2017] America’s hidden role in Chinese weapons research: Many scientists have returned to China
South China Morning Post ^ | 3/29/2017 | Stephen Chen

China’s efforts to lure its scientists back from overseas institutions have been paying off militarily, with more than a little help from the United States.

Military projects they have been involved in include China’s development of hypersonic weapons capable of penetrating missile-defence systems and the design of new submarines able to patrol quietly along the US west coast, researchers familiar with the programmes told the South China Morning Post.

For more than a decade, China has been ramping up efforts to lure back talented scientists working at laboratories in the US linked to America’s nuclear weapons programme and other military research, as well as those working for Nasa and companies such as Lockheed Martin Space Systems and Boeing.

Many of the scientists returning to China have worked at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, the birthplace of the atomic bomb, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, which plays a key role in today’s US nuclear weapons programme, or the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.

While the numbers remain unknown, so many scientists from Los Alamos have returned to Chinese universities and research institutes that people have dubbed them the “Los Alamos club”.

The Los Alamos laboratory, home to a wide range of defence research facilities, including a supercomputer and particle accelerator used for weapons research, has hired many foreign scientists to compensate for a shortage of American science and engineering talent.

Its website says more than 4 per cent of its nearly 10,000 employees are of Asian origin.

Under then President Clinton, In 1999, the USA accused Taiwanese-American nuclear physicist Wen Ho Lee, who worked at Los Alamos, of giving the design of America’s most-advanced nuclear warhead to China.

The charges were dropped by 2006 due to a lack of evidence but the incident sparked widespread unease among ethnic Chinese scientists at the laboratory.

One scientist who returned from Los Alamos was Professor Chen Shiyi, who as director of the State Key Laboratory for Turbulence and Complex Systems at Peking University played a key role in the development of China’s hypersonic glide vehicle, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in Beijing.

China has already tested the hypersonic glide vehicle, capable of travelling at speeds of up to 11,000km/h – about 10 times the speed of sound. At those speeds it could deliver a nuclear warhead anywhere on the planet in just over an hour – too fast for any existing anti-missile system to respond to.

Another reason the Natural Born Citizen Requirement (born to two U.S.S Citizens on U.S. soil) and ending the Anchor Baby Loophole should be enforced.

American & the UK (particularly the UK!) trained the scientists & engineers for Pakistan & Indian nuclear weapons program. Even more so the UK for Iraq’s. If you accept these people into nuclear physics\engineering programs they are not going to go back (If they go back!) to their 3rd World corrupt shithole dictatorships (Ok India not so much!) and say to the Fearless Leader ‘Nah I only want to do Atoms for Peace’!

Leftist / bureaucratic US universities need every foreign student they can get, paying full tuition, to keep their massive admin staffs and gender-studies departments funded.

Being an open society, the US allows these people to game both systems. Short-term job/work opportunities in China for mom or dad, while money and family is outside of China.

The US military sells weapons to Taiwan. The Chicoms “procure” it from Taiwan and reverse engineering it or flat out copy it. What’s the big mystery? It’s been going on since the Carter administration.

Well I can say this the companies involved with research and the Feds are all victims of massive bureaucracies and they do not care how or who is doing the work or reports just as long as they look good giving the presentation. I see it in my company everyday.
I think once the incentives wore off or ran out these guys cut and ran. The tech industry is rife with this and is continuing to get worse. Solution? I don’t have one that companies would use due to my bias being an American and seeing all this first hand in IT and R&D.

OK, riddle me this — why do we need to take FOREIGN students for these programs? Don’t we have enough of OUR OWN citizens who can do the same research work?

Is anyone really surprised by this? Non americans not being “loyal” to america. What was it that C.S. Lewis said: we laugh at honor and are shocked to find traitors in our midst.

And why would Taiwan, who China threatens to invade should she step out of line, provide China with these technology?

Because they have no choice? Because China takes what it wants? There are myriad ways of obtaining what they want once the US puts the cookie jar within China's sphere of influence.
