Pretty sure the reason that this one has lasted so long is that it isn’t switched off and on very often, if at all.

It is partially that and also that the filament is better supported and mostly that it is “burning” at a much lower temperature than a typical incandescent bulb. So it is not putting out much light. It is the same concept as the 130v “double life” “work light” bulbs that put out less light but are dimmer and more durable than a normal incandescent bulb. I have a couple of those in caged enclosures with hooks that have lasted many years and taken a lot of abuse. In the winter the heat that they put out can also be helpful for warming numb finger tips while working under the car.

HOT BULB

For better health, you should always burn a 50 watt incandescent bulb close to where you sit all evening long.

LED bulbs are for temporary lighting because they make us depressed. They are great low power bulbs for hallways and even rooms, but always have a 50 watt nearby in your bedroom or living room.

I’m sure it’s been off a number of times due to power outages, either because of construction inside the building or outages in the region.

The dimmist bulbs seem to go on forever. AOC, Tlaib, Omar, Pelosi, Clintons, etc.

We built our home in 1981 and the two lights in the foyer still work. They are twenty feet up so it’s a good thing! We are going to let them burn till they go out before replacing them. They are still bright as well. 38 years and counting...

Their are multiple American manufacturer’s who make “industrial” incandescent bulb’s for a couple dollars each . They are made legally and do so because when the foolish law was passed they left a loophole for the heavy duty bulbs to be made . Well worth the time to seek these out as the quality and longevity are unsurpassed along with the type of light they emit (easy on the eyes.)

SO you have a 60 watt bulb which is only putting out 4 watts. My guess is that it is running on reduced voltage. Either that or something changed with the filament at some point.

One fact about and incandescent bulb is that as you increase voltage(Which increases wattage) the life span of the bulb decreases exponentially. If you reduce voltage then the lifespan increases exponentially.

An old carpenter once bragged that he was still using his Grandad's claw hammer that had been passed down. *The handle had only been replaced 12 times and the head twice over the decades.

Reminds me of a scenario from an old business law class I had way back in college. An old Mariner has a fishing boat, over the course of several decades he replaces every single piece of the boat. Then one day he says to himself, "Hey, those old boat pieces really aren't in the bad of shape." so he puts them all back together. The question was under the law which boat is the original boat?

The answer, contrary to logic, was the boat that did not contain one piece of the original craft and the "new" boat that was actually 100% the old boat was actually considered a totally newly built craft.

I read once that tire makers could conceivably make a tire that can last a very long time but I guess the average set of tires tire lasts only about 65,000 miles if an owner is lucky.

That light bulb is a monument to male patriarchy and white supremacy...

Yer dang right! Whoever made the racist judgment that light was better than dark, anyway? Unless it was someone, you know, who just walked into a door...

“The stronger the vacuum the longer the bulb will last.”

Not true. Read about the halogen lamp in wikipedia. It’s a filament lamp with pressurized gas around it.

"under the law"

If the second boat was not titled & registared, the question is moot.

I was referring to the classic incandescent light bulb. All things being equal the stronger the vacuum the longer it lasts.

“killed off slowly by fluorescents and LEDs”

In the Wikipedia article about halogen lamps there’s this sentence:

“Standard and halogen incandescent bulbs are much less efficient than LED and compact fluorescent lamps ...”

Strange they don’t mention conventional fluorescent lamps which are identical in their method of producing illumination as the compact fluorescents, and have been in common use for at the last 60 years.

I’m in the lighting business and I tell people all the time and Thursday absolutely nothing wrong with Edison’s lamps

They don’t hurt your eyes; they’re perfectly dimmable ; and they’re a dollar

My house was built in the 1860s and the first thing I did was take out all of the compact fluorescent lamps and put in all regular lightbulbs

It is political: I am convinced that Jeff Immelt conspired with Barack Obama to outlaw the incandescent bulb (expired patent) in exchange for political support; in other words, literal fascism.

The CFL was patented and created a kind of monopoly for GE.

Leftists make everything political.

“I was referring to the classic incandescent light bulb.”

Read the Wikipedia article on “incandescent light bulb”. It says “filled with an inert gas or a vacuum.

The article on the halogen incandescent light bulb says

“In ordinary incandescent lamps, evaporated tungsten mostly deposits onto the inner surface of the bulb, causing the bulb to blacken and the filament to grow increasingly weak until it eventually breaks”

Planned obsolescence is a good thing. Otherwise, many big companies would have gone bankrupt by now.

I am willing to buy more stuff more often in that corporations can live to keep selling me more.
