Disney’s Mulan faces boycott calls after star Crystal Liu Yifei backs police in Hong Kong

Chinese-American actress Liu Yifei has attracted support and brickbats online after voicing support for the Hong Kong police on social media this week amid the city’s anti-government protests.

There were calls to boycott Disney’s live-action remake of Mulan , in which she has the title role. The hashtag #BoycottMulan was trending on Twitter on Friday, featuring in more than 21,000 posts. Liu’ s name featured in more than 16,000 posts.

On Weibo, China’s equivalent of Twitter, where she has 65.6 million followers, Liu shared a post by People’s Daily, the official newspaper of China’s Communist Party, with the quote “I support Hong Kong police. You can beat me now,” as well as the English words “What a shame for Hong Kong”.

The quote was a reference to a statement made by Fu Guohao, a reporter for People’s Daily affiliate the Global Times who was mobbed by anti-government protesters at Hong Kong airport on Tuesday evening because they suspected he was a Chinese undercover agent. Liu included the hashtag, in Chinese, #IalsosupportHongKongPolice.

While the People’s Daily post has been widely shared by Chinese celebrities in similar social media posts, Liu’s was singled out because she is headlining a major Hollywood production.

The Hong Kong police have been widely accused of using excessive force against protesters, and even journalists covering the protests. The United Nations Human Rights Commissioner, Michelle Bachelet, this week voiced her concern about police use of force and echoed calls for an independent inquiry into police handling of the protests.

Some of the latest tweets about Liu’s Weibo post YiFei Liu totally destroyed one of my favorite @Disney characters. Sucks! She supports the brutality of Hong Kong Police for beating up ppl. #BoycottMulan — Nardia Huang (@NardiaHuang) August 16, 2019

#LiuYifei can believe what she wants to believe. Last time I checked, you have every right to express your opinion in this country. #dontboycottmulan — Madeline Colombo (@ColomboMadeline) August 16, 2019

Critics of Liu’s Weibo post noted the irony of an American citizen banking her star turn in an American film while siding with authorities suppressing calls for democracy – a core value in the West, as many Twitter users were quick to point out. Mulan will open in cinemas on March 27, 2020.

Disney will likely make her apologize. They don’t give a rats @ss about America or Hong Kong, they want access to Chinese markets for their films.

She has to support the police or she’ll have to go home for Reeducation Camp

Her career is over. Jackie Chan went red about two years if I remember correctly with a negative statement about Americans.

RE: She has to support the police or she’ll have to go home for Reeducation Camp

Don’t we support the police here in the USA?

The Police in the USA are not beating up people protesting for freedom and democracy, and against the extradition of citizens to a foreign power (China).

Just like Hollywood kissed Hiter's ass in the 1930s.

Then they will not make her apologize if they want to keep China happy.

Live-action “Mulan” was a hawg-stupid idea to start with, in my opinion.

I hope the freedom-hating young lady is never heard from again ... but I know that’s unlikely.

Yeah, he’s another leftard though I suspect he has to be. Hollyweird would sell it’s own children for market share and so will Jackie Chan.

Deservedly so.

And why the heck would they make her apologize for supporting police brutality against Hong Kong protestors? If anything, them backing the brutality would be them speaking in solidarity with the Chinese. Now, if they made her apologize for siding with the Hong Kong protestors, that’s one thing, and I could understand them doing so in order to capitulate to Chinese markets, but knowing their love of the Chinese markets for their films, they’d have no reason to make her apologize, and if anything they’d have reasons AGAINST making her apologize.

Have little interest in the remake anyways, since I’m boycotting Disney over several idiotic decisions they’ve made, including not only making LeFou gay in the 2017 remake to Beauty and the Beast, but also having the utter audacity to boast about it before the film was even released, among other things such as the Jemele Hill incident at ESPN, and even without that, I’m not liking the fact that Mulan’s literally rebelling against her parents (she was very dutiful and loyal to her parents. Heck, even her becoming a soldier was largely to prevent her dad from becoming a red shirt thanks to his suffering a severe enough injury that he was simply unfit for combat). However, Crystal explicitly backing the ChiComs against the Hong Kong protestors is just even MORE reason to not see the movie.
