Illinois state Sen. Tom Cullerton indicted

A federal grand jury indicted Illinois State Sen. Thomas Cullerton this morning on embezzlement charges related to a job with Teamsters Local Union 734. Prosecutors allege he received $275,000 in salary, bonuses, health and pension benefits for “little or no work” as a union organizer.

The Villa Park senator, 49, worked for the union before assuming office in November 2012. In a statement, Cullerton’s attorney denied any wrongdoing and suggested Cullerton was the victim of Teamsters boss John Coli.

Coli is cooperating with federal investigators as part of a plea deal in an extortion case related to Cinespace Studios on Chicago's West Side. The announcement has shaken political circles, as Coli and the union were key donors and organizers for prominent elected officials over the years.

“As an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Army and highly respected public servant, Tom Cullerton is a person who is dedicated to his family, constituents, and all Illinoisans,” Cullerton’s attorney, John Theis, said in an emailed statement. “The action by the U.S. Department of Justice has nothing to do with Mr. Cullerton’s work in the Illinois State Senate but is the result of false claims by disgraced Teamsters boss John Coli in an apparent attempt to avoid penalties for his wrongdoing.”

Don’t see a party affiliation, so he must be a Democrat.

Just goes to show how far unions have fallen - a couple of generations ago this guy would have simply vanished like Hoffa or been croaked like Yablonsky.

Yes, if you don't see party affiliation in the first sentence, its a Dem. If its a Republican, that will be mentioned in the first sentence.

“Prosecutors allege he received $275,000 in salary, bonuses, health and pension benefits for “little or no work” as a union organizer. “

Isn’t that determination up to the people who employed him?

“Prosecutors allege he received $275,000 in salary, bonuses, health and pension benefits for “little or no work” as a union organizer.”

I didn’t know there was a law against receiving salary and benefits for doing “little or no work” ... maybe it’s an Illinois law, because half the people i used to work with would be in prison if there was such a law in Colorado ...
