Five years on, Mikael Skillt still doesn't know exactly what made him leave his construction job and his girlfriend to fight in the war in Ukraine.
“I’ve done tons of soul-searching, and the more I think about it, the less I know why I came,” the 43-year-old told VICE News.
But an undeniable part of the draw was that Ukrainian ultranationalists, many with barely disguised neo-Nazi or white supremacist views, had been a driving force in the revolution. Skillt, at the time a notorious Swedish neo-Nazi with a 20-year history in the extreme-right scene, felt compelled to join their fight.
“All guys who seek adventure dream about this, to create history,” he said.
Skillt missed the revolution, arriving in Kyiv a few days after the ouster of President Viktor Yanukovych. Instead, he got a war. A Kremlin-backed separatist movement soon swept across the Donbas, Ukraine’s southeastern region bordering Russia. Skillt, who had served for five years in Sweden’s National Home Guard, signed up to fight with the Azov Battalion, a newly formed far-right militia with deep neo-Nazi ties, and headed for the front lines.
Throughout 2014 and 2015 he served as a combat sniper for Azov, fighting in major battles in Mariupol, Marinka, Ilovaisk and Shyrokyne. “I managed to get most of the big ones,” he told VICE News.

Unmentioned is just why would a “white supremacist” be interested in a war where both sides are white?
I could see white supremacists going to places where there is conflict between whites and blacks, to fight on the white side, but Ukraine isn’t one of those places.

Not so for the Slavs, Balts, Magyars, and the other former Captive Nations. Communist rule for 40 to 70 years appears to have immunized them from the same poison that is slowly killing Western Europe. Largely Catholic in the Western areas of the old Soviet empire and Orthodox in the East, with a few Protestant pockets in Estonia, Latvia, and Hungary, Christianity is doing well. The Russian Orthodox Church has honored the last Tsar and his family, a slap in the face of Lenin and Trotsky, terrorists who got lucky and became tyrants crueler than the worst Tsar. They were followed by Stalin, world history’s most proficient murderer.

I find most of these articles long on accusation and short on evidence.
I don’t think it’s too far-fetched for them to use “Nazi” symbols.
The Ukraine WELCOMED the Germans in WWII to kick out the Soviets.
Ironically, had the Germans treated the Ukrainians better during their invasion/occupation, there may have been an entirely different outcome to the German campaign in the Soviet Union.
This reminds me so much of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) where the Republicans (Rebels) were supported by the Soviets, and the Loyalists were supported by the Nazis.
There is a lot of propaganda, and it is being used the same way by the same types of people.
It is interesting to read of America’s involvement (by proxy, through the Soviets via the American Communist Party instruments.
It was all orchestrated in the USA behind the scenes by the masters in the Soviet Union, people by the scores (people who became both witting and unwitting “Fellow Travelers”) joined groups called named like “Americans agianst Facism and War” which raised money and supplies to send to the Soviet Backed Republicans.
They had swanky full dress parties and massive lower class dance parties which collected a lot of money, only a fraction ever making it to fighters in Spain. The vast majority of it went straight into Stalin’s coffers.
There were a few thousand American men who volunteered to fight for the Republicans (Lincoln Brigade) snd George Orwell (British) also fought for the Republicans and they were treated badly in many cases. Stalin’s own people exectuted many, and they were sent into situations where they were killed or executed.
Many became trapped in Spain and were not allowed to leave the country. They were dupes with high ideals doing Soviet dirty work.

If I recall correctly, Ukrainian nationalists Azov Battalion were on the McCain/Hillary/Obama/Biden side while fighting against pro-Russian separatists in the Donbas.
The violent Nazi thugs always wind up being friends of Democrats. How is that?
AFAIK, Azov currently blacklisted by US government as a hate group as well.
