Bartender at the local joint up the street showed me this had been passed to them sometime this week.
A Google news search ("counterfeit $100 bill") shows dozens of recent articles about these things.
Seems to be pretty easy to detect, mainly by the feel of the paper and of course the Chinese (or whatever) markings. Also notice the "stripe" is printed and not glossy, the "ghost" image is missing, etc.
Banks are notoriously unsympathetic, and maybe even the local lawmen.

Maybe it’s from a Chinese monopoly set. The Chinese characters probably say “not legal tender”.
A cash-intensive business, a busy night, a crooked employee (or maybe one that was drunk or high), many possibilities. But yeah, dumb is right up there on the list.
Possibly, but generally any place that accepts large bills (any bill above a $20) will use the marking pen or bill verify machine.
I paid in cash at the grocery store and the cashier was checking the $1 bills. So they must have ran into counterfeit $1 bills at one time
The oriental markings should be a dead give away.
When my son was in high school, he and a buddy of his did grounds maintenance work at a golf course. They also subbed in for breaks in the small “pro shop”. Turns out someone passed counterfeit 20’s at the pro shop. The boys were intensely questioned/investigated by the Secret Service. Probably a good thing, as it certainly got their attention and they came to see the seriousness of the situation.

Real $100 bills are practically counterfeit with the way a decade of quantitative easing and low rates have devalued the dollar. :)
The pic I used is from the web. On the one I saw, the markings were fewer, smaller, and fainter, thus easier to miss.
I just ordered one of those - see if I can pass it at the same bar (jk)

The Chase ATM I use dispenses $100 bills. Just started doing that a few months ago.
