Its been a wetter than usual year in that part of the west, and grasshoppers tend to know it.

Some guy in France noticed how grasshoppers seemed attracted to water and discovered that in his speciments there is a parasite that can short circuit the hopper’s brains and cause them to go to water and die. Then the parasite is able to reproduce in the water.
