President Gerald Ford stated in Rockford, IL, March 11, 1976:

Gerald Rudolph Ford was the 38th U.S. President.
Born on JULY 14, 1913, he was named Leslie Lynch King, Jr. till he was renamed by his stepfather.
Gerald Ford attended the University of Michigan on a football scholarship, graduated from Yale Law School and served in the Navy during World War II.
He was the House Minority Leader until chosen to be Vice-President when Spiro Agnew resigned.
Gerald Ford then became President when Richard Nixon resigned.
He was the only President not elected.
When he assumed the Presidency on August 9, 1974, Gerald Ford stated:
"I am acutely aware that you have not elected me as your President by your ballots, and so I ask you to confirm me as your President with your prayers."
On September 8, 1974, President Gerald Ford stated:
"The Constitution is the supreme law of our land and it governs our actions as citizens.
Only the laws of God, which govern our consciences, are superior to it.
As we are a Nation under God, so I am sworn to uphold our laws with the help of God."

Ford was much smarter and more conservative, than people gave him credit for.
He certainly sounds much more conservative than your current average Pub politician of today.
That said, Reagan’s biggest mistake was Bush—a selection made under some pressure.
Ford’s equivalent was Nelson Rockefeller. I may be missing something, but I do not think that equivalent pressure existed.
I can sort of see convincing one’s self that Bush would play ball.
If you are conservative, one needs to remember DON’T FEED THE RINOS.
We’re having to pay the interest on all the bad ‘investments’ Obama made over an 8 year period of time.

This quote has also been attributed to Davy Crockett (circa 1829) and is consistent with his very-limited-government philosophy.
Yet when Big establishment religion swallows freedom whole hog, nobody sees a thing, even celebrating the chains and chastizing anyone who dares to warn and show the way up and out of the concensus lockdown paradigms.
It really will take a miracle to free the people from bondage.

Most people recognize a miracle when a man snaps out of a coma after being in one for years. How much moreso when millions snap out of a coma at the same time.
He was considered as being towards the left end of the Republican party. But those sentiments certainly resonate with Conservatives.
I have read things written by Adelai Stevenson, regarded as the most Leftist Democrat of his era, which sound like they would be said by a moderate Republican today.
I think in the past people were just relatively more sane.
