GALLIPOLIS, Ohio (WCHS/WVAH) — The matriarch of the Bob Evans family and company died this week in Ohio.

Jewell Evans, the wife of restaurant franchise founder Bob Evans, died Wednesday in her Gallipolis home, according to her obituary. She was 99.

The Bob Evans company shared the news on its social media channels.

"Her model of warm hospitality and grace have been integral to our history and values," the company said. "Our prayers and condolences go out to her family and friends. She will forever remain a part of us all as we draw inspiration from her incredible legacy.

Her husband and namesake of the now well-known restaurant franchise Bob Evans, Robert L. “Bob” Evans, died in 2007.

The restaurant got its start in the 1940s after Bob Evans began making sausage on his Rio Grande farm, according to the company website. As word got around about how good the sausage was, Evans invited more people to his farm and eventually started a small diner that quickly grew.

Jewell Evans was (literally) living high on the hog for over sixty years.
Here’s to a well run business model that still works.

My parents still eat at “the farm” once a month or so. Many years ago we even ate at the original restaurant.

A neighbor was telling us their son who worked at Bob Evans for almost 30 years was laid off in favor of some younger people, just before he reached retirement. Apparently they have done this to others, laying off people before they could retire. She’ll have nothing to do with Bob Evans.

Yes, that is one business model.

Great food, great hospitality. On a stop to NC to see my daughter, I stopped at their restaurant in Charleston, WV. The staff treated me like one of the family.

That seems kind of rotten if this guy was expecting a pension during all those decades. My father had a pension through General Motors in Michigan, starting in the 1980’s. 20 years later, they were almost bankrupt from such pensions. I think many later retirees had to settle for a lump sum and that was all. I don’t know if how much notice they got that their pension would not be coming as expected. A lot of untold stories like what you described.

Brings to mind their TV commercial jingle from the 70's that went,

Booo-ob Evans... ...Down on the farm.

Not far from where the Mothman made an appearance back in the day. I have nothing but admiration and respect for the Bob Evans restaurants I’ve visited on occasion over the years. “Sausage gravy and biscuits, please.”

I remember, warmly, the breakfasts that my son and I shared at the Bob Evans in Leesburg, VA. Good food, relaxed atmosphere.

The Bob Evans restaurant chain was sold several years ago and is not operated by the Evans family.

They were known elsewhere as Owens. Same menu but with Owens sausage.

Looks yum, but I haven’t had wheat for two-three years. And I don’t eat pork anymore, either. Big sigh.

I used to work at the one is S. Charleston. The manager was a real jerk. He was later fired for embezzlement big time. So close to retirement and he blew it. Was in all the media too because this guy had been at this location for decades.

I came back to that restaurant just to laugh at him. I can still see him now, sitting off in a corner looking very defeated. Not the supreme a-hole he once was.

I look at Bob, Jewell and wonder why did they ever hire this guy? Working there was shear hell and I’d shudder to think that working for Bob and or Jewell was that way too.
