A two year old small child reportedly died today after falling from deck 11 while the Royal Caribbean cruise ship was in port in San Juan.
The ship was reportedly docked at the Pan American dock II in San Juan.
There are conflicting information regarding the circumstances of the tragedy. One source (translated) states that the child “peeked into one of the windows that was open and fell,” and another newspaper reports that the child “was in the arms of his grandfather who slipped and fell.”
The police in San Juan are reportedly investigating the accident.
There have been relatively few situations where toddlers have fallen from upper decks on cruise ships. In 2012, a 14 month old toddler fell from deck 12 to deck 11 on the Monarch of the Seas and was injured. The ship turned around and returned to Port Canaveral, Florida, where the child received urgent medical care and recovered.
Local Spanish language media in San Juan are reporting that the child was on her grandpa's arms when she fell 11 decks down to the concrete pier.
Horrible either way.
A family member is posting that it wasn’t the grandfather but an uncle and the child squirmed in his arms and went through a “broken” window.
How can we believe reports on the cause of the tragedy when the news reports don’t seem to know if it was a little girl or a little boy who died.
Cruise lines go out of their way to block press coverage of ALL incidents. The press has no right to be on the ship, it is not a public area like a pier or park or city-based space.

There are a lot of crimes on cruise ships that do unreported, not to mention people who overboard never to be seen again. RIP little one.
Five years ago a man died on the dance floor. The staff swooped in, put up a cloth barrier for a couple minutes, and quickly left without missing a beat (no opun intended). It was so smooth that people on the other side of the dance floor didn even know it.
In the next port, a coroner’s vehicle met the ship. No press.
It doesn’t show up on published incident reports online.
There are kids of all ages on cruise ships, even infants. The cruise lines even provide day care and kids programs for families with kids.
One more reason Never to go on a cruise.. why would I spend all that money to feel like I’m in Chucky Cheese on the ocean ugh ugh ugh
After my navy days, I would NEVER go on a cruise. BUT when I finally did, where else can you go for about $100/DAY to get pretty incredible meals, incredible scenery......
But you have to be smart. You have to get the right meal staff, you have to go to the EARLY shows, you have to get the right shore excursions...
I am giving tours as a volunteer this summer. A European woman was NOT watching her child and it was HANGING from a place too high for survival. We had to scold her to watch her child. It to me was unbelievable that a mother would be so irresponsible. That happened today to me in a state park out west.
I made a similar vow after I left the Navy. But I broke that vow when I met my wife, and we've been on several cruises.
The first cruise was on a Celebrity cruise ship. This was probably in 1999 or 2000. Southern Caribbean. I was very impressed--it was a far cry from being on a guided-missile cruiser in the Navy, and I stood zero watches!
For this cruise line, on this particular ship, they did things the old way: formal dinners, assigned seating, same wait staff at our table all week. They knew our names, and we knew theirs. We gave appropriate tips, but didn't feel like they were "nickel and diming us."
We did another Celebrity cruise, followed by a family cruise on a Royal Caribbean ship in 2007-ish. Each one went progressively downhill. I guess we got what we paid for with the Royal Caribbean--it felt like a floating Walmart.
Completely casual. Show up whenever you want to dinner. We saw diners in shorts, tank tops, flip flops. For diners that didn't want to sit in a "stuffy" dining room, they had a buffet, and you could take your food out on the pool deck. Depending on your wrist band, you could get bar-brand drinks (all pre-made with generic alcohol), otherwise, you had to pay for drinks, even soft drinks. Boarding and de-boarding was like a zoo.
I love the ocean, and love being on or around it, but I'm in no hurry to get back on a cruise line anytime soon.

That child is only the ticket to govt $$$. Thousands only drag kids along for that sole purpose.
It’s not like that at all, except maybe Disney or Carnival (immature adults partying).
I was only once on the biggest ship, the Oasis, and they had an entire area dedicated to children. You could sign up the children for “day care” and it is divided by ages, and all completely contained. Our 4yo loved it, although they DID allow special “field trips” outside on the trips. But you would not be seeing constant children chaos at all.
But yes, please, people, try to keep your children under control and be as safe as you can.
Not my experience at all with Royal Caribbean. I mean, yes, people dress casually but only in general walking around and of course at that buffet deck. No big deal.
I only went once but my friend, who LOVES cruises and probably holds a record, loves RC too. She has plenty experience with all of them in the Carrinbean.
