A year ago, the internet was all aflutter with news that James Wan was producing a remake of Stephen King’s The Tommyknockers (which had previously been adapted for TV). That project, obviously, never materialized. Today, however, it would appear that the 20th Century and 21st Century Masters of Horror will once again attempt a collaboration with a remake of Salem’s Lot (originally directed by Tobe Hooper and also produced for TV).
The Wrap is also reporting that Gary Dauberman will be writing the script. The writer is one of horror’s hottest properties, linked to Wan as the scribe of all three Annabelle spinoffs (not to mention The Nun), and to King as the screenwriter of Andy Muschiettie’s IT and IT: Chapter Two.
It sounds like a dream team, and while Salem’s Lot still delivers thrills almost 40 years after its release, an R-rated adaptation would be fantastic. Want to fight about it?
Obviously, the project is in its infancy, but let’s hope this collaboration doesn’t disappear like The Tommyknockers. Finger’s crossed.
Read the book first, which was a real attention getter. Then watched the original mini-series with David Soul as Ben Mears, and James Mason as Richard K. Straker.
Watched the remake (2004) with Rob Lowe, but it wasn’t as good as the first series. They’re remaking “The Stand” as well.
Back to vampires und zombies, witches and wizards have run the course.
What next? Werewolves, of course. And from there, more politically correct apocalyptic sagas And aliens.
So long as TPTB are terrified of doing something differently the same ho-hum boring predictable plot lines continue.
The producers’ answer to it is more cowbell.
Lol you must be around the same age as me. Me and my brother saw that in 79 (he’s 2 years younger than me) and whoa, I remember that clear as a bell to this day, the vampire kid floating outside the window, it scared the hell out of us and we were watching it in the dark or the first time we saw the master vampire with the huge long fang lol lol Thatl starred Lance Kerwin and David Soul, that will always be the top vampire movie. Oh or how about the one scene, the vampire upstairs sitting in the rocking chair!!

King writes amazing novels, is an asshole personally, and most of the movie adaptations are horrible. Carrie and The Shining being two notable examples. I loved “The Stand” enough to visit most of the places in it, but can’t remember if I even knew there was a movie or TV version. Because it sucked or would have. As will the new one. Some books can’t be made into movies, that’s all there is to it.
Gotta give King props, his vampires were old school. They were evil incarnate and they looked like corpses and stunk of the grave.

Same here. I was a kid as well and had never been more scared in my life. For weeks afterwards I would wake up in the middle of the night and stare out my window from bed waiting for the vampires to arrive.
Salem's Lot traumatized a generation of Gen-X children.

If they actually follow the book it will be an incredible show, IMO.
Oh wow awesome!!! Thanks! Wow, that really holds up to this day, if they are making a remake I doubt they can do it any better than that.
Unfortunately, horror films don't age well. Younger viewers tend to be put off by the dress and dated styles of pacing and cinematography and don't find them frightening in the least.
I remember Phantasm scaring the bejeezus out of me when I was a kid. Not long ago I played it for some much younger cousins who laughed and thought it was stupid. They were right.
