I am a recovering American. This is a major admission on my part. Since moving to Canada in 2017, I’ve kept this part of my identity hidden from everyone except my closest friends. It’s a fairly easy sleight-of-hand. I’ve lived in various parts of the United States so I’m not easily pegged by any regionally-identifiable accent. The rest was simply a matter of a few linguistic somersaults: saying washroom instead of restroom; parkade, not parking lot; chatting at dinner parties about stratas rather than condo boards; and casually ordering deli meats by the gram (thanks to the conversion app on my phone). And to my utter delight, if my dirty little secret is revealed the universal response has been: “You’re American? But you seem so nice!”
To address the elephant in the room – quite literally, I suppose, since it’s the mascot of the Republican Party – yes, the tipping point for my relocation was the 2016 presidential election. Yet, I wasn’t one of those people who wrote angry Facebook posts and threatened to leave the country if Hillary Clinton didn’t win. That seemed overly dramatic – until, well, until the unimaginable actually happened.
I know some of my American friends think I took the easy route – the coward’s path, if you will. To the people who question my decision, I respond, “Do you really think it’s that easy to just pick up and leave the country where you were born and lived your entire life?” But the day after the election – and this is actually hard to really put into words – I just felt a seismic shift in my overall sense of well-being and thought, “I’ve got to get out of here.”

1. Canada has strict legal immigration laws and deports illegals.
2. You need a government ID to vote in Canada.
3. Canada is very protective with jobs and you need to prove no Canadian could do the job in Canada before you can legally work there.

The article makes sense. He moved from Southern California.
Most of the middle part of the country is not like he experienced at home.
It is interesting that someone seems so proud of leaving his country because of who was elected president.
If he thinks it is so bad, why didn’t he do something to change it?
Is he paying taxes in Canada? much much higher
Is he getting specialized medical care? long wait
Is he for free speech? much less able to do.
Canada is a wonderful place; I lived there for two years. They have the ability to benefit greatly from their association with the US.
I wonder, is the author revoking his US citizenship? if he actually did that I may take him seriously. He should put his money where his mouth is.

When I lived in Canada, people often asked me where I was from, as traces of my southern accent suggested I was not from there. If I answered, “I’m from the US,” I got a cold shoulder. If I said, “I’m from Texas,” their eyes would light up and I’d be peppered with questions about the old West. It was as if Texas were not part of the US.
The only time I ever faked a Canadian accent was when the wife and I were vacationing in Amarillo. We were walking into a drugstore when someone spotted our Ontario license plates and said, “Welcome to the United States.”
Rather than embarrass them, we put on our most Canadian accents and said, “Thank you very much.” LOL

Bottom line, that’s why the left hates President Trump - he’s not actively pushing all of their agendas. And that makes them scream at the sky.
