US defends itself after humiliating Thailand at Women's World Cup

Thailand's players were in tears at the full-time whistle after suffering the heaviest defeat in World Cup history at the hands of the US.

There were those on social media who criticized the defending champions for celebrating each goal, but Alex Morgan -- who became only the second American to score five in a World Cup match -- told reporters that "every goal counts."

With the US 3-0 up by halftime, the match was effectively over. With the title holders then proceeding to score four goals in the space of six minutes early after the break, it was a rout by the 56th minute.

But Ellis proceeded to make attacking substitutions, bringing on forwards Mallory Pugh, Carli Lloyd and Christen Press, decisions she defended after the match.

The Thai team is supported by a wealthy patron, the general manager Nualphan Lamsam, who is the chief executive of one of the country's largest insurance companies.

Her family's company sponsors Thailand's fledgling women's league, and players on the national team are also employed by her company.

What a fascinating dichotomy. We are defending our athletes saying that they should run up the score (I agree the rules determine that goal differential is important, so what to expect) and yet we have a LGBTQWERTY not sign the anthem although US Soccer mandated stadia (good for them). Moral of the story. ONLY WE CAN BEAT UP OUR OWN PLEDGES (Animal house reference) — congrats to the women of USSoccer — Whether you like it our not you Make America Great AGAIN — do not relent — and bring home the hardware

Score differentials count in breaking ties. It’s part of the game.

When you are winning by that much you put in your backup players with instructions to take as much time off the clock as possible..
= = = = = = = = =
From a sportsmanship view I completely AGREE with you.

BUT

As a (former) athlete, were I to be assigned to the 2nd or 3rd or cleanup crew, my precious moments would be utilized to show Coach what a terrible mistake he was making having ME ‘ride the pines’.

If you leave the starters in ( I KNOW -UNFAIR) you at least can keep them in ‘line’ by telling them if they don’t follow YOUR ‘rules’ etc they will be 2nd team.

OTOH ... Once you tell them to ‘lay down’ it may become sort of habit forming...

Really could be a conundrum of sorts...

That’s just the one dyke.

Most of the players seem lovely.

Watching those women wildly celebrating after crushing an inferior opponent was reminiscent of the affect and behavior of a child crushing bugs.

A bad experience can be motivation to improve. It’s natural to want to avoid humiliation the next time.

You are only allowed three substitutions in a match.

When you are winning by that much you put in your backup players with instructions to take as much time off the clock as possible... And then you thank the losing team for a good game.

You don’t humiliate them.

Well, that takes class and sportsmanship. Those days are long over. It's all about chest-thumping and parading around like idiots now.

“When you are winning by that much you put in your backup players with instructions to take as much time off the clock as possible”

That’s not how bracket football works.

The ties in the bracket go to the team with the highest score differential. There is no “mercy rule”. You should, and indeed must, run up the score.

I get that real football is not a thing in the USA, but at least learn the rules before commenting.

Why is women’s soccer being shoved in our faces?

Because it's the most politically correct thing imaginable.

Womyn + LGBTQERTY + Soccer = SJW wet dreams.

I would agree with you, under normal circumstances...

However, when you set up the tournament i a way that point differentials matter, you end that.

If 2 teams have equal records, but one has more overall goals than the other, it gets the better placement, as such, you have set up a system where running up the score is rewarded... and if your goal is to win... you don’t back off.

The system is skewed... I don’t agree with it at the individual game level, but I wouldn’t pull my A team either if I was the coach in this type of setup.

Exactly. Other teams will probably get similar scores against the Thais, so indeed, every goal counts.

They’re just mad that Americans won. Most other countries consider soccer to be THEIR sport. They think Americas are new on the international scene, and should play the humble student for a few years, vs trying to actually win.

Most think American dominates and influences their lives too much already, and should ‘be gracious’ just to watch the experts play from the shadows. Think again!! At least for the past 40 years, soccer has been growing, and is often played at schools. Some parents prefer it to what we call Football for their sons.

I did. And so did the others in the group I watched with who raised kids who excelled in organized sports and went on to become war vets like myself

One team member disrespects the flag/anthem while playing overseas for the US team they’re all disgraceful.

It’s a team or it’s not

Terrible
