The Police Blotter for my little suburb of Seattle has begun to use "them-they-their" instead of "he-his" or "she-her" when referring to suspects.

Most of the time the cops are dealing with individuals, but they now use third person plural pronouns to refer to one person.

I wrote to my local neighborhood newspaper and suggested they refer to suspects as "it" or "AHLF" (alleged human life form).

They/their/them is abominable English and is just plain stupid. I refuse to refer to any single person, or animal, with plural pronouns.

How about “it”? For pets, farm animals, and other birds and animals whose sex we can identify, we usually use he/she. If I see a pair of cardinals, or a pair of guppies I know which one is which and use masculine or feminine pronouns. But I can’t tell the sex of Canada geese or Kissing Gouramis by sight, so an individual I refer to as “it.”

I think a dinosaur fossil would be an “it”, too, but they named it Sue and should expect people would use feminine language about it. But there is no good reason to impose terms of human sexual confusion on a dinosaur.

Actually, for proper grammar, unknown sex of the object defaults to the masculine gender. You only use neuter for objects that don't have a sex.
