Kyler Bourgeous, 30, spent the first Saturday of June like many beforeout on the trails, running the peaks and slopes, and enjoying the day with his parents, who came to visit and see the wildflowers in bloom this time of year.
He took his parents to the Frary Peak trail on Antelope Island State Park in Utah, a trail he runs at least once a week. An avid trail runner, Bourgeous laces up 3 to 5 times a week, totaling about 50 miles.
Usually, Bourgeous will get in his own workout before hooking up with his parents, going for a trail run before looping back to meet them for a hike. Thats what he was doing this past Saturday. All was going normally until he ran over a small ridge.
There, he came within 10 to 20 feet of two massive bison that were concealed below it.
I had never seen bison up this high up on the ridge before, Bourgeous told Runners World.
He immediately stopped, did a 180-degree turn, and took a couple steps away from them before he heard one of the bison charge him. He started to run, but it was too late.
I'm just amazed at the whole thing myself, he said. Ive put in thousands of trail miles out there without incident. I thought I was gonna die right there.
The bison gored him in the hip and shoulder, which sent him flying into the air and down the hill. He somehow managed to curl himself into a ball to protect himself, but the bison came back and trampled him, kicking him in the rib and cutting open his head before it left.
I have hoof prints on my head and my back, he said.

“This is OUR House!”
Had a friend who went on a hike by himself near Salt Lake City about 10 or 12 years ago and he encountered a buffalo. He moved very slowly and tried to not show any signs he was a threat. The animal charged him and he got hit and landed behind the buffalo and remained as still as he could. Eventually the beast wandered off and my friend managed to get back to the now closed ranger station. Some other visitors saw him and he ended up air evac’d to a hospital. Broken collar bone, broken ribs, punctured lung, concussion. He stayed in ICU for about a week. He says he was lucky. In a way, yup. He was forever known as Buffalo Jim after that. I think he even penned an article for Field and Stream or a mag like that.
May is a peak time for bison to give birth, and there are likely many baby bison in the area this person was trail running. They were likely just being protective.
That’s no bull !
a neighbor raised bison, got gored one day in the side- he got some kind of nasty infection/bacteria from it, and ended up dying from the complications-
Bison burgers anyone?
Keep it up, and you'll experience both.
Theres a huge bison ranch in a small town called Florence Colorado thats fenced off . There are signs posted all over the place warning people not to stop and mess with them. The stupid tourists are always stopping to take selfies. Theyre magnificent beasts and be respected.
It’s called, ‘The Wild’ for a reason.
Genetic memory and payback
Was the bison part of the proletariat?
He set up a GoFundMe account to help with his recovery.
Really? He doesn’t have any health plan on his own?
30 y/o, and no nothing?
Or maybe his policy refuse to cover such injuries w/o a biug rate increase.
Might want to stay away from that area during this time of the year here on out.
I sympathize. We nearly got Gored in 2000.

Awesome... another reason I have not to run.
Me, either.
Once we were moving across an open area in deuce and a half trucks. Several of the bison decided to chase us. Since we were driving over open ground, you just couldn't speed up. The bison seemed determined to push us into bad terrain. One of the drivers, let a bison get too close, then he hit the breaks. The bison rammed the truck and fell down stunned. The whole herd broke contact after that and let us do what we wanted.
Bison aren't stupid, you just have to show them where they stand on the food chain.
Buffalo.
That’s what we call them. I don’t care if they are hooved ungulates, ruminates, whatever, technical schmecknical. Buffalo.
Bison have bad eyesight.
