NASA executive hired to lead 2024 moon mission quits after 6 weeks

Sirangelo has resigned, and Reuters reports that his "ouster was sealed by increasing skepticism that 2024 was a realistic deadline for moon landings."

This also comes after a proposal from NASA to create a separate directorate for lunar missions was rejected by lawmakers. Bridenstine said on Thursday that "given NASA is no longer pursuing the new mission directorate, Mark has opted to pursue other opportunities."

Is the muslim outreach still #1 priority?

We have zero shot at the Moon by 2024.
You would need to be doing test flights now on the lander and they haven’t even done test launches on the Orion full stack.
I don’t even think they have a design for the lander yet.

We don’t even have a launch vehicle, how are we supposed to get to the Moon in 2024?

It’s stupid to spend money going back to the moon when it is still questionable if we will have a country!

I agree. If they pull it off by 2024 it will be too too much of “see we said we could do it” and too too little of a robust mission it could be.

I think the original date was 2028. We could do lots of robotics exploration and exploration prep with them between 2024 and 2028, including preposition of material at the 2028 landing site ahead of time. Carrying and careing for humans takes a lot more weight and a lot more planning & preparation.

Its that SLS, a monster booster, but it keeps being delayed. Was supposed to have flown first a couple of years ago, now they are HOPING to try it next year.

I believe they have announced their plans to use commercial launchers to reach the moon, and Elon is grinning widely.

Saying they will do it by 2028 is like saying forgetaboutit, because of politics. The only chance to get it done is during the term of a president who proposes it, whether it’s 4 or 8 years. At least that’s how it seems to be in my view.

Kennedy's inauguration address would have been January 24, 1961 so the first landing in July 1069 was 8 1/2 years later. But, there was a lot of work done before Kennedy's speech. And this was a different country then. More get it done and less get the paperwork done first.

On the other hand, it would be nice to see it happen during President Trump's second term.....

I couldn't agree more. In fact, NASA and the Depts of Education and Energy should be abolished.

[How long did it take us in the 60s and with old technology.]

The NASA budget in the 1960’s was pretty much devoted to space. Today, we’ve got climate research and a bunch of other irrelevant things in there. I bet they also have race and gender quotas reducing the number of people who actually do things other than push paper. And the annual budgets for the moonshot era were 50% to 100% higher than today’s number in inflation-adjusted terms.

Yeah, this ain't 1961 and there ain't no Cold War supremacy mounting involved. Beside which the moon will be under water in less than 12 years. 🚀🌝🌊

July 1069? hehheheh over 892 years earlier - those guys in the middle ages were just genius ... :)

It was a totally different NASA also ... by 1970 paper work motif had mostly superseded the get-it-done ethic

Now its all paperwork climate change and muslims - out of the handful of engineers the US produces annually, the few engineers interested in space go in robotics, while many of the mission directors jealously guard the information they discover. Then there are all the black projects ... Zuma comes to mind. The military will probably get there before NASA (even-though NASA is part of DOD).
