My Vet was explaining how laser therapy is used on pets now to help heal injuries. He also mentioned laser therapy is now used to neutrilize snake venom when pets are bitten. He states it works almost instantly...don’t know why that wouldn’t work on people also.....guess there wouldn’t be any money in it for the un.
“Venomous” snakes, not “poisonous” snakes.
About twenty years ago, I remember attending a seminar where safety people were distinguishing between “poisonous” and “toxic”.
By “poisonous”, its meant that a particular substance kills in very small doses, whereas a “toxic” substance can result in death but at first causes grave illness and damage to the body and there is still chance of remaining alive.
By this measure, snakes such as the olive sea snake are “poisonous” (death can occur within a few minutes of a bite) while rattlesnakes are “toxic” (recovery can occur, but not before grave damage to the body).

I used to carry a nifty little device called the “Snake Doctor” whenever walking in the bush in Uganda. It was a de-tuned stun gun and of proven worth against neurotoxic and hemotoxic snake bites, as well as spiders, scorpions, wasps, etc.
The FDC raided the little company making these “Snake Doctors”, confiscated all their inventory and shut them down for “selling a medical device without conducting FDA approved clinical trials.”
If the Federal (and State) bureaucrats had any sense or compassion, they would have hooked this litle company up with a medical university to expidiciously conduct trials and issue the FDA seal of approval.
Stories on that date back to 1990. First I heard of it.
Wondering if the UN will come up with plan for helping snakebite victims while still protecting the poisonous snakes as “endangered”. I have a better idea....why not just keep the UN away from the issue completely.
You would think a writer for AP would know this: “Venomous” the word is venomous. If a snake is poisonous a person dies from eating it.
A more common distinction is that venom is injected by a bite or sting, while poison is ingested.
Poison is not usually distinguished by its entry route. It too can be injected, as well as inhaled or absorbed through skin.
I did notice the reference to Hamlet, though: “No, no. They do but jest, poison in jest; no offense in the world.”
I’d buy a new one for each trip back to Uganda, then leave it with a bush medical clinic when I left.
IIRC, they cost less than $40 back in the late 1980s - early ‘90s.
I figured that before I tried it on a local villager, I should know what it felt like. I tried it on my calf - quite a buzz, but not too bad.
Better than loosing a limb or your life. We had cobras, black & green mambas, puff adders, boomslangs, etc.

Why Does It Work?
The biological reason electroshock treatment neutralizes the incompatible alien proteins of snake venom remains unclear. Besides proteins, snake venom contains enzymes and trace elements that could easily be uncoupled or ionized by high-voltage electricity. In the British medical journal, The Lancet (Dec. 6, 1986), C. Kroege and K H. Meyer propose the theory that electricity may neutralize the snake venom by destroying the secondary and tertiary structures of enzymes by influencing their hydrogen bonds.
High voltage electricity may also reduce metal ions that are attached to harmful enzymes, thus making these enzymes no longer destructive. Also since body tissue is negatively charged and snake venom is positively charged, unlike charges attract. With the application of electricity, venom may become negatively charged, thus negating its magnetic attraction to body tissue.

All I remember was that the shock was thought to break some of the bonds on the long-chain protein molecules which make up most venoms.
Cheap insurance when you are in snake country.
