Like most people who are extremely cool, I'm a huge Jeopardy! fan and have been in awe of the recent dominant run by James Holzhauer. The 34-year-old professional sports gambler has piled up $1.7 million in just 22 games, through a combination of remarkable knowledge, fast buzzing, and lucrative betting.
He's averaging more than $76,000 per game. To give an idea of how impressive that is, when current winnings record-holder Ken Jennings set the one-day record in 2004, he won just over $75,000. Like former champ Arthur Chu, Holzhauer doesn't select dollar amount answers in neat rows, but rather he aggressively searches for "Daily Doubles" in order to maximize his chances. He's smart and ruthless. He's great to watch.
That is unless you're getting crushed by him on national television, as one salty runner-up named Robin Falco told CNN on Monday. (snip)

I have watched every game and he clearly uses his knowledge of the odds plus he really knows a lot of information.
I know they are supposed to select the questions far before the contestants are known and I know all the stuff about how they could not cheat.
I think they do cheat.
I don’t think they are giving them the answers or stuff like that but there are plenty of ways to give certain people an advantage.
Having said that, I doubt they really are cheating with him. He really is just that good.
I’ll have to admit, Holzhauer has me mesmerized. He’s incapable of failure. He misses a few, but he leaves his competition in the dust consistently time after time.
A few of them were pretty good matches but James is just too good at playing the game.
I hear there’s a line in Vegas, that Alex Trebeck will be dead before Holzhauer looses. As grim and dark as that sounds it’s quite appropriate and I’m sure James already has put some money on that line..
I am not a regular jeopardy watcher, but have seen Holzhauer a few times. He is like a human computer. I wonder if he has a photographic memory. He seems to know everything. Quite amazing.

You covered all the bases with your post. In fact you covered the outfield and infield as well. I’m not sure you even know where you stand on the issue of cheating, not cheating. 8>)

The key to Jeopardy is buzzer speed. Most contestants know most of the answers so the secret is to buzz in first. I think that gives a very slight advantage to the returning champions who have had more time to get their timing down.
(For those who don’t know, you can’t buzz in until Alex has finished reading the question and someone on the production activates the buzzers).
I know people who have literally killed for less than 1/1000 of that amount. So I'm having trouble knowing how being fast, smart and following the rules better than others makes him a bad guy

I saw that airing with Falco.
She came across like a bitter old maid.
I’m a little surprised to hear her complaints, but not shocked. I had to laugh out loud when she shrieked “it’s a game!” LOL. Well, the dearie wouldn’t still be so upset if she actually believed “it’s only a game,” now would she?
Unlike her tattletale, gossipy revelations, wherein she claimed James Holzhauer treated her, others and even the staff disrespectfully, the champion has always seemed likable and very friendly to me! I know he and Alex have friendly exchanges throughout the show.
In fact, the male contestant who came closest to unseating James, said that the Champ was very gracious to him and his young son.
I’ll stand by my opinion of Falco. Sore loser. Bitter old maid. LOL.

Did not know that, thanks for the info. Guess part of the skill is also calculating when Alex will exactly finish the question.
When I was in grad school, one of the students had tried many times to get on Jeopardy. He had not succeeded. He and I had the highest scores in the department on the GRE. I had scored a little better than him but he knew a lot of things I did not. He also noticed things which I did not.
One day he pointed out something they do. That was back in 1990. Since then I have noticed that he was right. It had to do with favoring female contestants. I am not going to say what it was but since then I have noticed some similar things favoring other groups.
It is something that they might even admit if called on it and many people would say it is OK.
I. Recall only 1time Alex directed the answers in 1category had to called in ascending order.
Our winner is going through $1000 and 800 first searching for daily double.
If that is found too early or doesn’t, find it the second round starts closer.
If he finds the daily double late in the first round I figure his challenger is psyched out.

It wouldn’t surprise me.
How it works is that the system lights up part of the board when it is time for people to buzz in. People can press it as much as they want, but if they buzz in before it lights up, it locks them out for a fraction of a second. Part of the key to winning is getting the timing down. If a contestant thinks their buzzer isn’t working, it can easily be tested by the staff, so yeah, it’s not a real reason. Just an excuse.
