Looks like a Finnish M40/M41 machine gun cupola.

Most of the holes appear to be 75mm impacts.

As for loud, not as loud as standard firing due to the machine gun muzzle being outside the pillbox.

I also agree its not shells from a destroyer

Look at the clustering. Also, look how the “spray” or movement generally flows outward from a generally central point.

I would guess someone rolled up an M5 anti-tank gun on the thing at close range and started blasting away

We’re being bombed by the 5000 ships the Allies haven’t got!

interesting
re “As for loud, not as loud as standard firing due to the machine gun muzzle being outside the pillbox” - I think they meant to be inside the ‘cake” when it was being shelled. :)

Check out this, a 26" inch armor plate from a turret off of the Japanese battleship Yamato which was struck by a 16" armor piercing shell. It is on display in a park beside a hidden Naval Museum at the Navy Yard off of M Street S.E, in Washington D.C. If you can find it, the museum is a treasure box of lots of unusual things, including an analogue computer used by U.S. submarines to aim torpedoes in WWII.

“someone rolled up an M5 anti-tank gun on the thing at close range and started blasting away”

Maybe after the war was over and they were disposing of thousands of tons of surplus ammunition. Certainly not DURING the war.

The second thing that strikes me is how fluid the steel was when it was hit. It must almost instantaneously melt when struck by the shells. The steel is very ductile, not brittle.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At imgur, a commentor said that ricochet must have been bad. With that fluid surface, maybe not?
Love that movie. Watch it every June 6th.
I've been to Normandy a couple of times. Hallowed ground.
I've shared this before, but my German grandfather was a civilian construction foreman who helped build the West Wall. The irony of my dad coming ashore a couple days after the main landing and possibly scrambling over the ruins of my grandfather's handiwork is not lost on me.
Ah, no. It is from a Yamato CLASS ship, not necessarily the Yamato and the hole was punched in the US.
I watched the Navy DDs work over Batangan Peninsula in VN in 1971.
They put shells on and around a hootch from a mile offshore.
We felt puny with our mere 50cal.
Such a classic line!
It is dawning and Pluskat is relieved after a long night. The men will eat breakfast, but Pluskat wants to take one more look. He starts to say that there isn’t even a seagull out to see . . . when he finally sees a huge armada headed toward his beach. He turns around and says: "The invasion . . . it’s coming." Pluskat calls into headquarters to say that there must be 5,000 ships out on the English Channel. He is told to pull himself together, because the Allies don’t even have 2,500 ships, much less 5,000. Pluskat yells into the phone: "Well dammit! Come and see for yourself, you fool!’ On the other end, the officer asks where are these ships headed? Pluskat screams into the phone: "Straight for me!!"
That never fails to make me laugh.
If a battleship shell hit near there, we wouldn’t have this interesting picture. It might have just dug the the thing up and deposited it somewhere else...
