Officials in Cape Cod are searching for ways to prevent shark attacks as the number of great whites in their waters grows. A shark safety report has been commissioned, with local groups lobbying for approaches ranging from early-warning systems to baiting and killing the animals. Heather Doyle, founder of Cape Cod Ocean Community, argues in favour of warning systems and says fear of sharks is being driven by 1975 film Jaws.

Start harvesting the marine mammals in number and the white sharks will leave.
Or, start packing the area with “migrants” and “asylum” seekers.
Cue “It’s caused by global warming “ in 5,4,3,2,1 .....

If they were great black sharks, you can bet your bottom dollar that the powers in charge would simply kill them off.
One very simple solution.... stay out of the water!
Eat’em back.
Serve shark steaks. Problem solved.
Seals are the favorite prey of great white sharks. Grey seal numbers along the MA coast have increased from a few hundred in the early 60s to the tens of thousands. They eat most of the fish that fishermen catch and they attract great white sharks that (rarely) eat the occasional tourist. Solution: restart the bounty program on seals. Like alligators protected seals eventually become serious pests.
Seals are practically an invasive species in the Monterey Bay. The Whites should expand their search pattern to include that area.
It is true that seal populations have been doing really well in the area. There’s seals in abundance all the way down to New York City.
Could always import some orcas, but then - goodbye harbor seals.

Why are there so many white sharks here now? What happened? It wasn’t like this before?
Basically it is because seals, and their predators the white sharks, were given protection by the Federal Government. This is an example of “Today’s solution is tomorrow’s problem.” Looks like tomorrow’s problem has arrived.
From 1888 to 1962, Seals were culled in Maine and Massachusetts by paying a bounty on them, this kept their numbers down. The Federal Marine Mammal Protection Act gave seals protection in 1972. Throughout Massachusetts the gray seal population exploded from a few dozen in 1972, to an estimated 50,000 or more in 2018.
White sharks, were routinely killed for their trophy jaws, and meat; they were a rarity in Massachusetts when they received Federal protection in 1997. Whites in the 8 -10-foot range have recently arrived in Massachusetts waters. These relatively smaller white sharks were born after the 1997 protection provided by the Federal government, and is a sign that the 1997 protection is working. Massachusetts and other states went along with the Federal Govt. and protected white sharks in state waters. - Tom
Look on the bright side, the Annual Martha’s Vineyard Shark contest out of Oak Bluffs will attract more fishing enthusiasts.
